Exploring the origins of humanity—along with the many facets of what makes us human—has enticed researchers across disciplines and centuries. It is also the primary quest of the Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny (CARTA). This year, six graduate students have been awarded fellowships to support their participation in CARTA’s Graduate Specialization in Anthropogeny.
UC San Diego Health will open Jacobs Medical Center, a 245-bed medical and surgical specialty hospital, on November 20, 2016. Named in recognition of $100 million in gifts from Joan and Irwin Jacobs, the 10-story facility combines renowned physician-scientists and care teams, precision medicine, clinical trials and creative arts and culinary offerings to provide an extraordinary healing experience for patients and families.
The San Diego chapter of the ARCS Foundation, Inc. has awarded a total of $255,000 to 34 graduate students at the University of California San Diego. The annual fellowship awards recognize exceptional students who are pursuing research in the natural sciences, engineering and medicine.
For the past three years, Joy Frieman has been searching to find a suitable way to honor her late husband, Edward A. Frieman, former director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Noting that, “Ed was one of the very early people to identify global warming,” Mrs. Frieman recently gave $2.5 million to endow a faculty chair and two fellowships in climate sustainability.
U.S. News and World Report has named the University of California San Diego the 15th best university in the world, up four spots compared to last year, in the third annual global rankings, released today. The campus was ranked as the 4th best public university in the U.S. on the list of the world’s top 1,000 colleges. The rankings measure factors such as research, global and regional reputation, international collaboration as well as number of highly-cited papers and doctorates awarded.
The University of California San Diego is organizing the 2016 Global Empowerment Summit jointly with the nonprofit Alliance4Empowerment to share best practices, connect, brainstorm and come up with solutions for social impact and innovation.
