Coming out has always been a deeply personal decision for those ready to share their sexual orientation. UC San Diego undergraduate Joelle Victoriano has been more open about her identity as a bisexual woman over the past year, something she had previously only discussed among peers her own age.
For Transgender Day of Visibility, UC San Diego alumna Hillary Whittington returned to campus as a proud mother of two, PTA volunteer, public speaker—and parent of a transgender child. She and her husband, Jeff, were on campus to discuss Hillary’s new book, “Raising Ryland: Our Story of Parenting a Transgender Child with No Strings Attached.” The memoir tells both the resistance and support Whittington and her family encountered during their child’s transition from female to male.

Tuesday, May 3, 2016, marks the grand opening for Audrey’s, the new and long-awaited café in Geisel Library, the University of California San Diego’s flagship building. On April 13, eight members of the University of California San Diego community were recognized for their substantial contributions to academic and research integrity on campus. The 6th Annual Integrity Award Ceremony was hosted by UC San Diego’s Academic Integrity Peer Educators, in conjunction with the Academic Integrity Office and Research Ethics Program.
University of California San Diego’s Luis Martin-Cabrera has been named a 2016 Whiting Public Engagement (WPE) Fellow by the Whiting Foundation for his proposal to investigate the lives of indigenous groups living in a region known as the “Saudi Arabia of Lithium.” A key component in rechargeable batteries for laptops and cell phones, lithium is actively mined in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. This activity is changing the landscape and the lives of people living in the region. As a fellow, Martin-Cabrera will receive $40,000 to fund six consecutive months of leave to work on his ambitious, public-facing project.
