When Irwin Jacobs left Massachusetts Institute of Technology to take a job UC San Diego, the professor of computer science and engineering knew there was something distinctive about the university.
UC San Diego alumnus and Qualcomm co-founder Franklin Antonio is donating $30 million to the university in support of programmatic expansion of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. In recognition of the generous gift, UC San Diego will name a planned building for engineering research and education Franklin Antonio Hall.
The University of California San Diego has been named the nation’s 10th best public university for LGBTQ students, according to BestColleges.com. The new rankings measure academic institutions that create environments and policies which meet the needs of students with a wide range of gender and sexual identities, along with additional academic and affordability metrics.
To help close the gap between the pace of innovation and society’s ability to deal with these advances responsibly, the University of California San Diego—one of the world’s greatest producers of technology, medical innovations and scientific knowledge—has launched the Institute for Practical Ethics. Loyal campus donors Joel and Ann Reed have committed to providing generous annual gifts to support the institute in the near term, and to create a $1 million endowment for permanent support in the future. The gifts will be included in the Campaign for UC San Diego.
The year was 1960. John F. Kennedy was elected president, “To Kill a Mockingbird” was published and the U.S. launched satellite Transit-1B into space, ushering in a new era in navigation technology. One other pivotal event happened that year—the University of California San Diego was officially established on Nov. 18 as the seventh campus in the UC system.
As manager of the Simulation Training Center at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dudek uses high-tech manikins (or patient simulators) like Bobby to mimic the verbal and physical symptoms of a disease, such as irregular heart rhythms, difficulty breathing, sweating and bleeding. Medical students and residents do a lot of their clinical training this way—working in small teams to spot and interpret symptoms, and take the correct course of action to help the “patient.”
