Holocaust Living History Workshop Hosts Winter 2017 Events on “Holocaust & the Burden of History”
The Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLWH) at the University of California San Diego continues its year-long series of educational events with three insightful programs this winter, underscoring this year’s theme, “Holocaust and the Burden of History.” This year’s events approach the Holocaust from various angles to shed light on lesser-known aspects of the atrocities committed, such as the transgenerational transmission of trauma. The series, now in its ninth year of programming, is presented by the UC San Diego Library and the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program.
Latest ‘Inside Innovation’ Examines Stem Cells’ Role in Causing (and Fighting) Cancer
The next presentation in UC San Diego’s “Inside Innovation” series features Dr. Catriona Jamieson speaking on “Detection and Therapeutic Targeting of Cancer Stem Cell Evolution.” The free and public presentation will be held 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Roth Auditorium at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, 2880 Torrey Pines Scenic Drive. A networking reception will follow.
UC San Diego Archaeologist Explores Prehistoric Sites in Indian State for Conservation
UC San Diego professor of anthropology Thomas E. Levy, who directs the Qualcomm Institute’s Center for Cyber-Archaeology and Sustainability, spent a week in the Indian state of Telagana visiting 10 ancient sites, including one of the largest groups of ‘standing stones’ thousands of years old. Levy hopes to return with an expedition to document the little-known sites for digital conservation.
Toeing the Line: Study Finds Brain Cells that Signal Path of Travel
In a paper published by Nature Neuroscience, UC San Diego cognitive scientists say they have found neurons that help an animal align itself within a cognitive map of its environment. The neurons signal “I’m on this line, in this orientation.”
UC San Diego Research Awarded $3.8 Million for Critical, Innovative Work
University of California San Diego researchers are leading three separate research projects, each involving faculty from across the UC system. A total of $3.79 million in grants from the University of California Multicampus Research and Programs Initiatives has been awarded to fund the work.
