September 13, 2018 — The Nikon Imaging Center, a collaborative microscopy center that provides local researchers with access to the latest imaging technologies, opened September today at the University of California San Diego.

September 13, 2018 — UC San Diego and the Black Alumni Council are partnering to strengthen support of Black students. In total, $135,000 will be awarded to 54 students through the UC San Diego Black Alumni Scholarship award this fall, including 19 incoming freshmen and 35 current students whose awards will be renewed.

September 10, 2018 — The University of California San Diego announced that Lytx, a San Diego-based video telematics and analytics pioneer, has established the Lytx Graduate Fellowship for Masters of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) students at the university’s Rady School of Management.

September 4, 2018 — The UC San Diego Library will celebrate 15 years of Dinner in the Library, its signature fundraising event for lovers of libraries and books, with San Diego-raised novelist and UC San Diego alumnus, Luis Alberto Urrea ‘77 on Friday, Sept. 21 from 6-9:30 p.m.

August 23, 2018 — Andrew J. Viterbi, a renowned pioneer in the communications world, is creating a lasting legacy in health care through a philanthropic gift of $50 million to the University of California San Diego. Inspired by his father, an ophthalmologist, Viterbi’s gift will name The Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology and The Viterbi Family Vision Research Center, and create six new endowed chairs for faculty. His generous support is dedicated to advancing research, education and eye care. The gift contributes to the Campaign for UC San Diego, the university’s $2 billion fundraising effort.

August 9, 2018 — More than $312 million was raised during fiscal year 2017-2018—a record-breaking amount for any San Diego institution of higher education in a single year. The funds go toward the university’s $2 billion goal as part of the Campaign for UC San Diego. Since the campaign was launched in 2012, $1.6 billion has been raised.

August 7, 2018 — Now in its 25th year, the annual Luau and Legends of Surf Invitational unites more than 500 surfers, scientists and cancer survivors who share two great passions: surfing and finding a cure for cancer. All proceeds from the public event, which has raised over $8 million since it was launched in 1993, go to support research, teaching and clinical programs at Moores Cancer Center—the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in our region, and one of only 49 in the U.S.

July 24, 2018 — They each bring diverse expertise as doctors, educators, lawyers and entrepreneurs. Yet they all share a common interest: propelling the bold experiments, lifesaving solutions and nontraditional learning opportunities at the University of California San Diego. The UC San Diego Board of Trustees are unique ambassadors who dedicate their time and talents to supporting the university’s continued growth. This year, eight trustees will join the 2018-19 UC San Diego Foundation Board.

July 20, 2018 — The governing board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) unanimously approved this week two grants worth more than $2.2 million to University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers investigating stem cell-based therapies for a rare genetic disorder that affects the heart and a chronic, progressive affliction of the lungs.

July 18, 2018 — “It may not be easy to run an engineering school, but it’s impossible without your friends,” said Jacobs School of Engineering Dean Albert P. Pisano at the annual Charles Lee Powell Foundation graduate fellowship luncheon. “To the ladies and gentlemen of the Powell Board—I am grateful for that friendship which was paid forward through other deans and other times. I, too, am standing on the shoulders of all the previous investment, and I do really appreciate all of that.”
