April 16, 2012 — As fellow researchers from the University of California, San Diego were participating in the San Diego Science Festival last month, research scientist and Jacobs School of Engineering alumnus Albert Yu-Min Lin (‘08, ’06 and ’04) was exciting students and the public at a science festival more than 10,000 miles away – in South Africa.

April 5, 2012 — The arguments have been made in the case of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Not only will the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling determine presidential powers and constitutional limits of government, but it will also set a course for healthcare, health law and economics for all Americans.

April 3, 2012 — Halbert L. White, Jr. – Chancellor’s Associates Distinguished Professor of Economics in the Division of Social Sciences at the University of California, San Diego and cofounder of Bates White Economic Consulting – died March 31, 2012, following a four-year battle with cancer. He was 61.

March 15, 2012 — The University of California, San Diego was ranked 36th in the World Reputation Rankings by the Times Higher Education. The Reputation Rankings complement the annual World University Rankings, published in fall 2012, in which UC San Diego was ranked 33rd.

March 1, 2012 — Robert S. Sullivan, dean of the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego, has been elected vice chair-chair elect of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).

February 22, 2012 — Graduates of the University of California, San Diego are ranked 8th for salary earning potential in the 2011-2012 PayScale study measuring top state schools across the nation.

January 25, 2012 — The University of California, San Diego ranks 11th among all large universities in the nation, up from 14th last year, on the Peace Corps’ annual list of “Top Colleges and Universities,” released today.

October 18, 2011 — The UC San Diego Student Foundation—one of the only student foundations in the country—received a record 505 donations in its first fundraising week of the year

October 10, 2011 — The estate of Alice Goldfarb Marquis, Ph.D., an accomplished writer, historian and alumna of the University of California, San Diego, has left $1.1 million to support the UC San Diego Libraries. The gift from the Alice G. Marquis Living Trust, which represents the largest bequest ever to the Libraries, will help to maintain and enhance collections and services of the UC San Diego Libraries, with a portion of the gift specifically designated to augment the existing H. Stuart Hughes UCSD Libraries Endowment for Modern European History. The Libraries will also direct some of the funding from the bequest to establish a new study area open 24 hours, five days a week, in Geisel Library.

September 16, 2011 — Blood and corruption may not be for every moviegoer, but dark themes provide creative juice for film composer and UC San Diego alumnus Larry Groupé. “Straw Dogs,” with a score by Groupé, premieres nationally this weekend. Groupé will discuss his score at the late matinee showing this Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Krikorian Metroplex in Vista.
