2013 is turning out to be a banner year for University of California, San Diego alumnus D. Fox Harrell (Ph.D. Computer Science and Cognitive Science, ’07). In July he received tenure at MIT, where he is an associate professor of digital media.

“Honoring Tradition through Culture and Education” is the theme of the 8th annual California Native American Day celebration at the University of California, San Diego. The celebration, running from Sept. 27, 2013 through May 2014, will feature events that pay homage to the past, present and future cultures of Native American people in San Diego, the state and throughout the nation.

A crowdsourcing effort led by University of California, San Diego research scientist Albert Yu-Min Lin has turned into a new type of challenge – inviting programmers worldwide to develop a machine-learning algorithm that would match human perception when picking out interesting features in satellite imagery used in Lin's search for the lost burial site of Genghis Khan.

Computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego, have developed a new model to simulate with unprecedented accuracy on the computer the way cloth and light interact. The new model can be used in animated movies and in video games to make cloth look more realistic.

The Desert Research Institute, the environmental research arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education, has awarded University of California, San Diego research scientist Albert Yu-Min Lin its 27th annual Nevada Medal for his work in digital exploration and science education. Lin is the youngest research scientist and the first materials scientist and engineer to receive the DRI Nevada Medal.

UC San Diego Alumnus Rex Pickett, known best for “Sideways,” his hilarious, best-selling novel about the exploits of two old college buddies on a wine-enriched road trip, has donated his personal papers to the Library’s Special Collections. The archive includes a wide range of materials—including posters, photographs, and other memorabilia—both from the novel and the wildly popular movie it spawned.

In a new college affordability ranking, the University of California, San Diego has been named the 6th best college in California for its return on investment for graduates. On average, UC San Diego alumni enter the workforce earning an estimated $48,400 per year after graduation, positioning the university among the most financially effective of all California post-secondary schools.
