November 16, 2016 — Leaders from the University of California San Diego will be joining administrators throughout the UC system on Nov. 19 for the Achieve UC outreach initiative, designed to urge thousands of high school students and their families to aim for a UC education.

November 15, 2016 — The Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH) and the CaliBaja Center for Resilient Materials and Systems are hosting their first scholarship fundraiser for UC San Diego Latina/o students. The “Exhibit and Sale of Mexican Fine Art and Folk Art” takes place at the Great Hall in the International House on campus, Nov. 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Nov. 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Event organizers, Luis Alvarez, director of the IAH, and Olivia A. Graeve, professor of mechanics and materials at the Jacobs School of Engineering, hope to raise $30,000 in support of student scholarships.

November 14, 2016 — Biocom, the San Diego-based advocate for California’s life-science sector, has announced that the University of California San Diego has been named its “Community Partner of the Year” and will receive that recognition at the organization’s Annual Dinner on Nov. 17 at the La Jolla Hyatt Aventine.

November 10, 2016 — From the U.S. to China to Germany and beyond, Distinguished Professor of Chinese History Paul Pickowicz takes a novel approach to teaching history—he transforms students into experienced filmmakers. For more than two decades, Pickowicz has enlivened history with the use of film. As part of his Humboldt Foundation Award, Pickowicz recently taught his history/film course to a group of 24 students from all over the world at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. The course examined the global city of Shanghai during the 1920s and 1930s from the historical angle of the Chinese silent film era.

November 10, 2016 — Do you have an idea for a better mousetrap, or an app that will change the internet? Student inventors and problem solvers at UC San Diego are invited to apply for a chance to win up to $2,000 to use for building their inventions, mentoring, and resources.

November 3, 2016 — The UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts kicks off a two-year program in the University Art Gallery (UAG) to celebrate its 50th anniversary with “Extensions of Photography: A Visual Arts Faculty, Emeritus Faculty and Alumni Exhibition,” running through Dec. 9. Two related events will be held to inaugurate the celebration, including a panel discussion from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Nov. 3 at the University Art Gallery and the “Artists & Language” reception from 3-5 p.m. on Nov. 4 in the Seuss Room at the Geisel Library.

October 31, 2016 — UC San Diego’s Computer Science and Engineering department and Illumina Inc. co-sponsored DNA Day 2016, a day-long workshop featuring talks and cutting-edge bioinformatics and genomics research, including several speakers with dual appointments in CSE and the UC San Diego School of Medicine.

A study of 12 million Facebook users suggests that using Facebook is associated with living longer – when it serves to maintain and enhance your real-world social ties. Oh and you can relax and stop watching how many “likes” you get: That doesn’t seem to correlate at all.

October 31, 2016 — The University of California San Diego's iconic, futuristic spaceship of a building, Geisel Library, will unveil its first virtual-reality 3-D display system during a public reception on Monday, November 7 from 10 am to noon. The life-size CAVEkiosk will be open to the campus community and the public at large, but it will also allow researchers to analyze and visualize 3-D data from at-risk archaeological sites in Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Israel, Greece, Morocco and Cyprus.

October 28, 2016 — Faculty and students from UC San Diego’s Department of Theatre and Dance excel on Broadway, in theaters nationwide, and in the film and television industry. Playwriting alumna Rachel Axler ’04, who just won her third Emmy Award for the critically acclaimed HBO show “VEEP,” is one example.
