With the turn of a dial, “Dante” is alight, a ring of flames burning at 600 degrees. The new Neapolitan brick pizza oven at the UC San Diego Faculty Club is the centerpiece of a revamped contemporary lounge designed to host departmental gatherings, conferences, private parties and more. The campus community is invited to join in happy hour from 4-7 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday this fall quarter.

Over the weekend, a small group of programmers participating in the inaugural Zoohackathon had the opportunity to go behind the scenes at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and see firsthand some of the species the San Diego Zoo Global has rescued from illegal wildlife trade.

The University of California San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities took a leading role to secure a $2.59 million grant award from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The award supports a joint program with the San Diego Community College District (SDDCD) that helps humanities transfer students transition to UC San Diego—a top 10 public university. According to Dean Cristina Della Coletta, it is the largest foundation award the division has received in support of the humanities.

The Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLWH) at the University of California San Diego kicks off a year-long series of educational events with two compelling programs this fall, underscoring this year’s theme “Holocaust and the Burden of History.” The 2016-17 workshop events will approach the Holocaust from various angles to shed light on lesser-known aspects of the atrocities committed.

The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study – by the National Institutes of Health, with leadership from the University of California San Diego – aims to change that. The largest long-term study of brain development and child health in the United States is now underway.
