August 5, 2016 — The University of California San Diego’s Department of Theatre and Dance is one of the top theater training programs in the nation for a reason—it produces promising artists. This fact wasn’t lost on the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, an organization that supports emerging artists, when it recently named its Princess Grace Award winners for 2016. Among them were three UC San Diego alumni: Christopher Scott Murillo, ’13; Keith Wallace, ’16 and Jiehae Park, ’09. Murillo and Wallace each won in the category of Theater and Playwriting, while Park was awarded a grant for a Works in Progress Residency. The three former Tritons, along with other winners, will be celebrated at the annual Princess Grace Awards Ceremony in New York City, Monday, Oct. 24.

August 5, 2016 — Rubén Flores, Ph.D., is the Director of Commercialization in UC San Diego’s Office of Innovation and Commercialization. Announcing his appointment in March of this year, Vice Chancellor for Research Sandra Brown said that he exemplifies the high-achieving entrepreneurial spirit necessary for new discoveries and new solutions.

August 4, 2016 — SMART study is among the first to test an intervention that used several technologies – including social media, apps, and text messaging – to promote healthy changes in physical activity and diet. At two years in duration, it was also one of few weight loss interventions evaluated for longer than a year.

July 25, 2016 — “MouthSense” and “SmartFoam,” two new inventions by engineers in the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California San Diego, have attracted funding from NextWave Venture Partners.

July 20, 2016 — Professor Emeritus Stanford S. “Sol” Penner, one of the founders and creators of the engineering program at the University of California San Diego, passed away on July 15, 2016 at his home in La Jolla, Calif. He was 95 years old.

July 11, 2016 — UC San Diego has been ranked the 17th best university in the world, up four spots compared to last year, by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). The fifth-annual global rankings measure universities’ quality of research, faculty, influence, enterprise and successful alumni.

July 6, 2016 — The University of California San Diego has admitted a record 30,273 freshman and 9,802 transfer students for the fall 2016 term. The number of new freshmen is up 3,773 compared to last year and there is also an increase among transfer admits by 1,652 students. Of the 40,075 admitted students, the university anticipates enrolling a diverse class of 5,660 freshmen and 2,933 transfers.

June 29, 2016 — The Office of Innovation and Commercialization at UC San Diego plays a significant role in the just-announced Urban Innovation Collaboratory, a partnership between UC San Diego Extension and the Downtown San Diego Partnership.

June 29, 2016 — A recent study by BestColleges.com analyzing which colleges enroll and graduate women with majors in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) found that the University of California San Diego tops the list with one in three women graduating with a STEM degree. UC San Diego’s proportion of STEM graduates is three times the national average.
