Rebeca Lopez had never traveled to another state. Her first cross-country adventure brought her to Washington D.C., where she and a dozen UC San Diego undergraduates lobbied congressional representatives and senators in support of the DREAM Act, a bill designed to provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented young people who were brought to the U.S. as children.

“I want to surround myself with like-minded people who are going to challenge me,” explained Eden Markel as she transferred her belongings from her parent’s car to a cart during move-in day. One of UC San Diego’s newest students, she joins over 9,000 first-year and transfer students who arrived on campus this September.

Will Tanaka, a sophomore at UC San Diego, is growing mushrooms from food waste. He first discovered what is called “environmental farming” from a pair of UC Berkeley graduates who founded a startup for sustainable planters that allow people to grow mushrooms, herbs and more right on their windows.

As part of a University of California system-wide initiative, UC San Diego is committed to going zero waste by 2020. That means that at least 90 percent of campus waste will be diverted from landfills or incineration. The campus is already well on its way toward that goal with innovative programs to eliminate food waste, and help students who may be experiencing food insecurity at the same time.

Sustainability is a part of UC San Diego’s DNA, dating back to campus founder Roger Revelle’s pioneering efforts related to climate change. In April, the campus acknowledges Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, with a monthlong slate of sustainability-focused activities, including a green labs fair, tree planting and the campus’s annual Sustainability Awards.
