SPARK Gala to ‘Ignite the Fight Against Cancer’ April 26

SPARK Gala, hosted by University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center, will rally the region to help make the future brighter for patients with cancer. Slated for Saturday, April 26 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, the evening will feature a cocktail and wine-tasting reception, dinner and special performance by award-winning R&B singer and actress Heather Headley.

Cymer Co-Founder Richard Sandstrom and Wife, Sandra Timmons Give $1.2 Million for Students

University of California, San Diego alumni Sandra Timmons and Richard Sandstrom, co-founder of Cymer, Inc., are passionate about their alma mater and helping future students achieve the same world-class education they received at UC San Diego. That’s why the couple recently pledged a gift of $1.2 million to the campus for student support through their charitable Timmstrom Family Fund. The gift will be split, per the donors’ wishes, to support graduate students in the Jacobs School of Engineering and undergraduates through the Chancellor’s Associates Scholars program.

Football Legends Champion Prostate Cancer Research March 21

The University of California, San Diego will host the second annual Breakfast with Champions on Friday, March 21 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the La Jolla Country Club. The event, which is open to the public, features conversations with Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees Mike Haynes and Charlie Joiner. All proceeds will benefit prostate cancer research at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

Coding for a Cause

Sneha Jayaprakash, a sophomore at UC San Diego, is passionate about two things: computer science and social change. As part of the 2013 Microsoft YouthSpark Challenge for Change contest, she developed a winning proposal for a mobile app to engage students with volunteerism and social issues—and received a prize of $2,500 to get the project going. Now, with an additional $10,000 awarded by the Microsoft Imagine Fund last month, Jayaprakash is getting the opportunity to turn her idea into a successful startup.

‘Big Bang’ Benefit Bolsters UC San Diego Student Engagement Through the Arts April 6

Arts patrons and campus supporters will come together Sunday, April 6 for the University of California, San Diego’s annual Big Bang at ArtPower! fundraiser. Chaired by ArtPower! supporter Martha Dennis, the celebration includes a festive brunch and special performance by the Escher String Quartet. In addition, donors Joan Jordan Bernstein and Rita and Richard Atkinson will be recognized for their generosity, vision and leadership support. All proceeds will benefit the organization’s student engagement programs, with the goal of creating the ArtPower! Student Engagement Endowment Fund. The event is open to the public.

Competition to Give Back: UC San Diego Kicks Off Annual United Way/CHAD Campaign

The competition has officially begun to see which vice chancellor area, or the chancellor’s office, can inspire the most participation in supporting the annual UC San Diego United Way/CHAD Campaign. Running from Feb. 13 through April 11 this year, the campaign is a call to action encouraging campus staff and faculty to play a role in strengthening the San Diego community.

Campus Serves Local Community in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

More than 155 UC San Diego volunteers got their hands dirty painting, gardening and cleaning at Bayside Elementary School in Imperial Beach Sunday as part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Afterward, the volunteers joined fellow students, staff, faculty and alumni to represent the university in San Diego’s 34th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade downtown.

Campus Reaches Out this Holiday Season

On the second Thursday of each month, a group of UC San Diego volunteers meets in the evenings at the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank to help sort through donations and assemble food packages for San Diego community members in need. Vanessa Pool, project manager at the Qualcomm Institute, the UC San Diego division of Calit2, started the UC San Diego Night at the Food Bank in June 2008.

UC San Diego a Top Producer of Fulbright Students

The U.S. Department of State recently released its list of colleges and universities that produced the most Fulbright students for 2013-2014, and UC San Diego is one of them. The campus had 24 applicants for the program, of which 12 students and recent graduates were selected—the highest number on record for the university.

College-Ready Conference Reaches out to African American Students

For fourth graders and high school seniors alike, now is the time to be thinking about college. That was the message of ‘Dare to Dream College: The African American Experience,’ held Nov. 2 on the UC San Diego campus. More than 900 students, families and community members from across San Diego County participated in the college-readiness conference to learn about the application process, financial aid and other resources for college preparation.
