The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently awarded $742,222 to UC San Diego’s Dr. Sandra Daley, professor of pediatrics and director of the Comprehensive Research Center in Health Disparities, to fund the Health Careers Opportunity Program/San Diego Regional Consortium (HCOP/SDRC).

Marching behind a banner declaring “Freedom through Education,” more than 500 members of the UC San Diego community turned out to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy in San Diego’s 32nd annual MLK Day Parade. Dozens of the university’s participants, including Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, had just come from National City where they helped to restore portions of the American Legion Hall as part of the annual MLK Day of Service and UC San Diego’s Volunteer50 program.

The 16th annual Lytle Scholarship Concert returns to the University of California, San Diego with “Jazz Gone Global,” a celebration of the history and spirit of jazz music featuring world renowned musician Cecil Lytle on piano and Gilbert Castellanos on trumpet, with friends.

It’s no secret that with the down economy and high unemployment rates many San Diego residents are facing financial hardship, and the holidays can be an especially challenging time of year. It’s also a difficult time for nonprofit organizations, which are experiencing an increase in demand for their services just when the economy is making fundraising more challenging.

As a UC San Diego alumnus, Kevin Churchill, ’96, already knew that the university had a reputation for cutting-edge research and advanced medical care. However, it wasn’t until his son Benny was born visually impaired that Churchill discovered the remarkable breadth of leading research taking place at his alma mater.

The Founders’ Celebration “What R U Doing?” video contest wrapped up last week with a number of outstanding videos capturing life at UC San Diego. We heard from an alumnus who started his own business making custom skateboards, a staff member who does family arts outreach programs, a student who is working on cutting-edge robotics research, and many more creative UC San Diego community members.
