The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine will establish a new endowed chair thanks to a legacy gift from Trude Kahn Hollander, M.D. A longtime friend of the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center, which houses the department, Hollander has made arrangements in her estate plan to fund the Dr. Trude K. Hollander Endowed Chair. The endowment will support a faculty member in the Division of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Thirteen UC San Diego students will take off for research projects around the world this fall with funding from the Boren Awards for International Study and Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The merit-based federal programs each support study and research abroad to foster global understanding and partnerships among U.S. citizens.

Last summer, Howard University students Daril Brown and Nailah Seale came to UC San Diego to participate in hands-on bioengineering research alongside faculty and graduate students. This fall, they return to campus to pursue their doctoral degrees, thanks in part to mentorship through the UC San Diego Howard Partnership for Graduate Student Success.

Five winners have been selected to receive complimentary pairs of tickets to TEDxUCSD and dinner with the speakers at a pre-conference mixer courtesy of Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. More than 1,800 entries were received for the giveaway contest, which was open to the campus community from April 24 through April 29.

When Brayden Burge was 15 months old, his parents noticed a significant drop in his skills and a sudden increase in illness. Brayden was taken to the University of California, San Diego Health System and diagnosed with mitochondrial disease.

New York Times bestselling author and physicist David Brin, angel investor and Red Cross instructor Kai Chang and Miss California 2013 Crystal Lee are among the speakers selected to present at the 2014 TEDxUCSD. Now in its second year, the on-campus event will bring together 15 leading thinkers and doers from across multiple fields—many of whom are affiliated with UC San Diego—to engage the campus community with “ideas worth spreading.”

Last quarter, Shaila Bonanno graduated from UC San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in human biology and aspirations to pursue medical school. Before she begins her medical training, however, Bonanno is taking a gap year to pursue another passion: teaching. She applied to and has been accepted to serve with City Year, an AmeriCorps program that partners with public schools in high-need communities to help keep students in school and on track to graduation.

That’s exactly what UC San Diego graduate students were challenged to accomplish for the inaugural Grad SLAM competition, which concluded April 9.

Hundreds of volunteers arrived on campus Saturday to welcome newly admitted freshmen to UC San Diego for Triton Day. Now in its third year, Triton Day is an annual event designed to inspire admitted freshmen to see themselves as future Tritons and accept their offer of admission from the campus. From greeting students and families in the parking lot to helping set up booths, answering questions and managing the schedule of entertainment, campus volunteers were involved in nearly every aspect of the day, helping to ensure it left a memorable first impression of UC San Diego.

V.S. Ramachandran, director of the Center for Brain and Cognition at UC San Diego, was recently honored as the 2014 Scientist of the Year by the San Diego chapter of the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Foundation. The award was presented April 4 at the organization’s annual Scientist of the Year dinner.
