UC San Diego Launches Chancellor’s Endowed Chair and Faculty Fellowship Challenge

Universities have used endowed faculty chairs for more than 500 years to recognize, recruit and retain the world’s top scholars. Faculty fellowships, similarly, honor junior faculty who show capacity for great distinction in their research. Both honors provide a perpetual source of funds to support scholarly work, and they can play an important role in attracting and retaining academic leaders. To help the campus stay competitive, Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla recently launched the UC San Diego Chancellor’s Endowed Chair and Faculty Fellowship Challenge.

Travel Grants Help Grad Students Take Their Research Around the World

In the northern fjords of Iceland, during the darkest days of the year, Rachel Beetz set out to capture the movement of the stars. Every night for 30 days—one moon cycle—she positioned her camera to take a long exposure photograph. The patterns of movement, or “star trails,” would become her launching point for composing a new piece of music.

Alumna Steph Barry Joins UC San Diego to Head Alumni and Community Engagement

Steph Barry, a UC San Diego alumna and global business executive, has been appointed Assistant Vice Chancellor of Alumni and Community Engagement, effective Jan. 29. Barry joins the campus Advancement team following her 19-year tenure at WD-40 Company, where she most recently served as Vice President for Strategic Projects. Headquartered in San Diego, WD-40 Company is a global organization that currently markets its products in 188 countries worldwide.

Volunteers Partner with Father Joe’s Villages for Day of Service

More than 125 UC San Diego campus community members came together Sunday to make a difference in the lives of homeless men and women in San Diego. At Father Joe’s Villages—San Diego’s largest homeless services provider—volunteers helped with much-needed painting, repairs and cleaning as part of UC San Diego’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

New University Center of Exemplary Mentoring Launches

Eleven incoming students in the Jacobs School of Engineering and Division of Physical Sciences have been awarded fellowships as part of the new University Center for Exemplary Mentoring, launched by UC San Diego with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Each student will receive $40,000 over four years and participate in professional development activities designed to prepare students for a career in academia.

ArtPower Director Jordan Peimer Introduces Innovative Artists to Campus

In his first year with ArtPower, Jordan Peimer spent a lot of time in the audience, watching performances through the eyes of students and community members. He noted what piqued their interest and stimulated their curiosity. That feedback became the basis for ArtPower’s 2015-16 season, the first curated under the leadership of Peimer, who joined ArtPower as executive director last October.

UC San Diego ArtPower’s 2015-16 Season Brings Global Artists to San Diego

ArtPower, a multi-arts presenter at the University of California, San Diego, will offer six distinctive series in its upcoming season: chamber music, film, innovation, dance, global music and jazz. The season includes the return of audience favorites, such as the Calder Quartet and David Sedaris, as well as global artists making their San Diego debut.
