More than 3,350 stories, magazines, design portfolios and other demonstrations of outstanding work were considered by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for this year’s Circle of Excellence Awards. The national awards program recognizes superior accomplishments in the fields of advancement services, alumni relations, communications, fundraising and marketing. UC San Diego was honored with four awards for creatively and effectively engaging internal and external audiences through print and digital publications.

As a college student, Elena Hood knew firsthand the importance of having a place to call home and find familiar faces. In her own experience as an undergraduate, it was her involvement with the Native community that played an integral role in her academic success. This summer, Hood will begin to cultivate similar opportunities for community growth at UC San Diego as the inaugural director of the Inter-Tribal Resource Center, the campus’ newest space dedicated to inclusion and outreach efforts.

When you love what you do, there is no such thing as ‘retirement.’ Dr. Ruth Covell and Charles Kennel are emeriti faculty, yet they continue to dedicate their time and expertise to students and faculty at UC San Diego, as well as the local community. In honor of their continued service, Covell and Kennel received the Dickson Award, which includes a $10,000 grant to support their teaching, research and service initiatives.

Coming out has always been a deeply personal decision for those ready to share their sexual orientation. UC San Diego undergraduate Joelle Victoriano has been more open about her identity as a bisexual woman over the past year, something she had previously only discussed among peers her own age.

Today, the White House will be honoring University of California San Diego student Meghan Yap, one of 10 students from across the country being recognized as an “It’s On Us White House Champion of Change.” The event is part of a series of campaigns happening around the country in recognition of National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.

It was a drizzly Thursday afternoon when they began to arrive with pillows, sleeping bags and suitcases in hand. Yet the wet weather did little to temper the enthusiasm of the 244 high school students who traveled to UC San Diego from across the state to take part in an overnight program designed to introduce historically underrepresented students to college life.

When Dr. Jona Hattangadi-Gluthbegan her career as a new faculty member at UC San Diego’s Moores Cancer Center, she was excited by the possibilities in front of her but concerned about meeting expectations, including her own. At this early stage, how do you prioritize patient care while fulfilling research, teaching and university service obligations? What is the best way to develop a clinical niche and academic career and still have a rewarding personal life? After being matched with a senior faculty mentor in her field, Dr. Christine Chung, she gained insight on how to develop a pathway to accomplish her research, teaching and clinical ambitions.

Six UC San Diego faculty members will be honored at the 42nd annual Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Awards for going above and beyond to make a positive impact in their teaching, research and service. The recognition ceremony will be held Thursday, April 14 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine.

On Tuesday, April 5, the campus and local community are invited to attend the free premiere of “Fallen Star: Finding Home,” a 50-minute film by artist Do Ho Suh. The documentary tells the behind-the-scenes story of the planning, engineering and installation of “Fallen Star,” the 18th addition to UC San Diego’s Stuart Collection, an ongoing program of commissioned, site-specific sculptures.
