Six UC San Diego faculty members will be honored at the 42nd annual Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Awards for going above and beyond to make a positive impact in their teaching, research and service. The recognition ceremony will be held Thursday, April 14 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine.

On Tuesday, April 5, the campus and local community are invited to attend the free premiere of “Fallen Star: Finding Home,” a 50-minute film by artist Do Ho Suh. The documentary tells the behind-the-scenes story of the planning, engineering and installation of “Fallen Star,” the 18th addition to UC San Diego’s Stuart Collection, an ongoing program of commissioned, site-specific sculptures.

The information they learned about university admission requirements was useful, but what Adriana and Raul Ojeda valued most was the hope inspired that their daughter Alysa could attend a university like UC San Diego. That’s what the Comienza con un Sueño (It Starts with a Dream) event, held March 12 on campus, was all about. The aim of the college readiness conference was to help prospective students and their families, especially first-generation and underserved Chicano/a and Latino/a students, realize that they are more than capable of achieving their higher education goals, and that barriers such as financial aid are not insurmountable.

A campus-wide interdisciplinary research collaborative, the Black Studies Project connects faculty, graduate and undergraduate students from across UC San Diego who are producing cutting-edge scholarship on black life, culture and experiences.

Every Sunday afternoon, the local community is invited to explore the University of California, San Diego’s unique architecture, public art collection and vibrant living and learning neighborhoods. The free, two-hour tours highlight the history of the university and its role in the biotech boom; the evolution of UC San Diego’s six colleges; its green building designs and strategies; and other notable points of interest across the 1,200-acre campus.

They clicked immediately, as though long-lost brothers. Gerardo Arellano and Gabriel Agundez were best friends and roommates who bonded over house music and political activism as undergraduates at UC San Diego more than 20 years ago. They reunited at a recent event at the campus Raza Resource Centro, which Arellano now directs. Agundez was there with his step-son, Christian Sanabria, a new transfer student. He told Arellano he was entrusting him—and the university—with his son, to gain the student experience they lacked.

You’re cruising along the highway and suddenly the dreaded “check engine” light blinks on your dashboard. As you rifle through your manual trying to determine the cause, steam starts rising from under the hood. What now? On Jan. 27, students at UC San Diego were invited to learn how to respond to just such roadside emergencies as part of a new Life Skills series. The workshop, hosted by the UC San Diego Women’s Center, also focused on how to find a reputable repair shop. Studies have shown that women, in particular, can be the target of higher price quotes on auto repairs.

Where others might see obstacles, Dejanay Wayne sees opportunity. For the past two months, the UC San Diego undergraduate has taken the initiative to meet one-on-one with campus leadership to share her ideas on how to make the university more welcoming to students of color. As a result of her newfound alliances, she secured bookstore giveaways to help recruit underrepresented students to UC San Diego, introduced ethnic hair and skin products to campus, and is now working to develop a retention program that pairs current undergraduates with first-year underrepresented students.

Aaron Harvey, a first-year student at San Diego City College, would like to become a public policy attorney to advocate for those who are unfairly criminalized. He was among more than 20 students who took part in a new daylong program Nov. 19 designed to encourage local black community college students to see themselves at UC San Diego. Participants paired up with current UC San Diego students to attend a class, learn about campus culture and gain information about admissions and financial aid.
