Everyone has a story to tell. Struggles and triumphs, setbacks and sweeping successes. It is human experience that motivates this year’s UC San Diego All Campus Commencement student speaker, Richard “Ricky” Flahive, a peer mentor and aspiring community leader whose own narrative is one of happy persistence despite countless hurdles. As a first-generation, low-income student who wasn’t sure he would even graduate high school, Flahive had to restart multiple times to defy the odds.

It has been four years since the idea took shape. A unique scholarship program that would open doors to local San Diego high school students who aim to be the first in their family to attend college, yet are constrained by financial burden. As David Gubser started to revise his will, he began to think of the causes that meant most to him. In the wake of the hate-based shootings that occurred last year at an Orlando, Fla., nightclub with a largely gay clientele, Gubser resolved to offer support to local LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) programs. Among his plans, he established a $200,000 endowment through his estate that will support scholarships for LGBT students as well as Critical Gender Studies majors at UC San Diego.

It was a family tradition. Every summer, Karana and Aurora Stokum would fly to San Diego to visit their grandfather, Eugene Swantz, who would treat them to an afternoon at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. They would delight in the chance to meet the sea cucumbers at the tide pools, and watch the stately seahorses sashay through their tanks. Upon his passing, Swantz granted a gift to Scripps Oceanography to support K-12 outreach education at Birch Aquarium as a way to cultivate this same sense of wonder and inquiry among other youth.
