For fourth graders and high school seniors alike, now is the time to be thinking about college. That was the message of ‘Dare to Dream College: The African American Experience,’ held Nov. 2 on the UC San Diego campus. More than 900 students, families and community members from across San Diego County participated in the college-readiness conference to learn about the application process, financial aid and other resources for college preparation.

The U.S. Department of State recently released its list of colleges and universities that produced the most Fulbright students for 2013-2014, and UC San Diego is one of them. The campus had 24 applicants for the program, of which 12 students and recent graduates were selected—the highest number on record for the university.

Projects from two “centers of excellence” at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego – the Center for Large-scale Data Systems research (CLDS) and the Predictive Analytics Center of Excellence (PACE) – were highlighted at a White House Office of Science and Technology Policy meeting focused on accelerating research, development, and collaborations in data-enabled science and engineering.

Two educators from The Preuss School UCSD will travel to one of the U.S. Army’s premier leadership training institutions this week to take part in the inaugural National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and U.S. Army Leadership and Professional Development Symposium. Principal Scott Barton and athletic director Lisa Hawk are two of 30 school leaders from around the country who will participate in this unique opportunity.

Researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, have built a Linux cluster using 16 Raspberry Pi computers as part of a program to teach children and adults the basics of parallel computing using a simple model that demonstrates how computers leverage their capacity when working together.

Researchers led by bioengineers at the University of California, San Diego have generated the most complete genome sequences from single E. coli cells and individual neurons from the human brain. The breakthrough comes from a new single-cell genome sequencing technique that confines genome amplification to fluid-filled wells with a volume of just 12 nanoliters.

The Part-Time MBA program (FlexEvening) at the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego has been ranked 5th in California and 23rd in the nation by Bloomberg Businessweek. This year marks the first time the Rady School’s FlexEvening program has been ranked by Bloomberg Businessweek, which publishes its survey in odd-numbered years.
