Kyoto Prize Laureate and Evolutionary Biologist Masatoshi Nei to Speak March 18

As part of the annual Kyoto Prize Symposium, world-renowned evolutionary biologist Masatoshi Nei, Ph.D., will speak at the University of California, San Diego on March 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the Price Center West Ballroom on campus.

Heart of San Diego Gala to Fete Fashion Designer Zandra Rhodes March 1

The 17th annual Heart of San Diego Gala, hosted by the University of California, San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, will pay tribute to philanthropist and renowned fashion designer Zandra Rhodes on March 1 at The US Grant Hotel. In addition, the gala will celebrate the memory of the late Duane Roth, former CEO of Connect and a long-time supporter of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center who passed away last year. The event will include a cocktail reception, dinner and dancing.

‘Big Bang’ Benefit Bolsters UC San Diego Student Engagement Through the Arts April 6

Arts patrons and campus supporters will come together Sunday, April 6 for the University of California, San Diego’s annual Big Bang at ArtPower! fundraiser. Chaired by ArtPower! supporter Martha Dennis, the celebration includes a festive brunch and special performance by the Escher String Quartet. In addition, donors Joan Jordan Bernstein and Rita and Richard Atkinson will be recognized for their generosity, vision and leadership support. All proceeds will benefit the organization’s student engagement programs, with the goal of creating the ArtPower! Student Engagement Endowment Fund. The event is open to the public.

For Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, UC San Diego Library Gets Gift of New Seuss Materials

Every year the University of California, San Diego Library, the world’s repository for the original works of Dr. Seuss, holds a campus birthday party to celebrate the March 2 birthday of Dr. Seuss. The party will be held at noon on Monday, March 3, but it’s the UC San Diego Library that is getting the gift--a gift of more than 1500 additional items donated by Audrey Geisel from the personal archive of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to the reading public as Dr. Seuss.

California’s First MRI-Guided Laser Treatment for Brain Cancer

Using a novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided laser technology, neurosurgeons at UC San Diego Health System have successfully treated a malignant tumor deep inside a patient’s brain. This is the first time that this FDA-approved laser-based treatment has been performed in California.

Study Evaluates Role of Infliximab in Treating Kawasaki Disease

A study led by physicians at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego looked at intensification of initial therapy for all children with Kawasaki Didease in order to prevent IVIG-resistance and associated coronary artery abnormalities by assessing the addition of the medication infliximab to current standard therapy.

Philip M. Smith, the founding co-chair of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) Advisory Board, passed away on February 16, 2014, after a brief illness.

In Memoriam: Arthur M. Wolfe 1939-2014

Arthur M. Wolfe, an American astrophysicist who for a decade directed the Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences at the University of California, San Diego and achieved widespread recognition for his discoveries about star formation and the early universe, died on February 17 following a battle with cancer in La Jolla, Calif. He was 74.

UC San Diego Hosts Military Pathways to College Success Conference

The University of California, San Diego will host Military Pathways to College Success—a one-stop higher education conference for military service members and their families—from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 22, 2014 at the campus’s Price Center East Ballroom. The conference is designed to showcase the many transfer options available to service members, veterans and their dependents who are attending, or planning to attend a four-year university by way of a California community college.
