Five UC San Diego undergraduate students who are former foster youth and two junior faculty members were awarded a technology package from Sony Electronics, Inc., as part of a nationwide scholarship program during a reception on Nov. 1. Sony has awarded equipment packages annually for the past five years—a total approximate value of $53,000—to help UC San Diego students and faculty achieve their academic and teaching goals.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have used genetic engineering of human induced pluripotent stem cells to specifically and precisely parse the roles of a key mutated protein in causing familial Alzheimer’s disease (AD), discovering that simple loss-of-function does not contribute to the inherited form of the neurodegenerative disorder.

Students in the Kaibigang Pilipin@ student organization have joined together to help victims of the Haiyan Typhoon in the Philippines. Yesterday, Kaibigang Pilipin@ (KP) org members tabled on Library Walk to collect donations that included canned food and clothing. In addition, the students placed a donation bin in the Cross Cultural Center to collect items such as wound care materials, mosquito repellent, infant formula and blankets.

The biggest outdoor shake table in the world and a robot designed to move along utility lines have received Best of What’s New awards from Popular Science, the world’s largest science and technology magazine. The two projects are featured in the magazine’s December issue, now on newsstands.

The UC San Diego Faculty Club means many things to many people. A home away from home, comfort food and familiar faces draw regulars for weekday lunch buffets. Community members learn of groundbreaking research in their own backyard. And alumni return to reconnect with their alma mater. As a central meeting place on campus, the club builds a sense of fellowship among faculty and staff, alumni and community members. Permanently established as a campus forum in 1988, the Faculty Club will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year with a special celebration.

UC San Diego is putting the finishing touches on the preparations for its 2013 Founders’ Celebration, which kicks off today. For Founders’ Day alone, this includes bringing in more than 1,000 bags of popcorn, 300 feet of extension cords, 30 pounds of Atlantic City salt water taffy, 124 square feet of artificial turf and 375 chairs—just to name a few of the items on the setup list. The result: a transformation of the heart of campus into a festival reminiscent of the time when UC San Diego was officially established, that is, San Diego in the 1960s.

For fourth graders and high school seniors alike, now is the time to be thinking about college. That was the message of ‘Dare to Dream College: The African American Experience,’ held Nov. 2 on the UC San Diego campus. More than 900 students, families and community members from across San Diego County participated in the college-readiness conference to learn about the application process, financial aid and other resources for college preparation.

The U.S. Department of State recently released its list of colleges and universities that produced the most Fulbright students for 2013-2014, and UC San Diego is one of them. The campus had 24 applicants for the program, of which 12 students and recent graduates were selected—the highest number on record for the university.

Projects from two “centers of excellence” at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego – the Center for Large-scale Data Systems research (CLDS) and the Predictive Analytics Center of Excellence (PACE) – were highlighted at a White House Office of Science and Technology Policy meeting focused on accelerating research, development, and collaborations in data-enabled science and engineering.
