November 21, 2013 — Neurosurgeons at UC San Diego Health System are using a new approach to visualize the brain’s delicate anatomy prior to surgery. The novel technique allows neurosurgeons to see the brain’s nerve connections thus preserving and protecting critical functions such as vision, speech and memory. No needles, dyes or chemicals are needed to create the radiology scan.

November 21, 2013 — Much more than financial advisors, UC San Diego Foundation trustees work as a team to connect the university with community partners and discover resources needed to launch innovative programs. Some of the campus’s most impactful initiatives—such as the Qualcomm Institute, the Preuss School UCSD, Moores Cancer Center, and more—were made possible through gifts to the Foundation. To ensure the continued success and growth of the campus, seven new trustees will join the 2013-14 Foundation board, including two UC San Diego alumni, a former chancellor and several regional business executives.

November 21, 2013 — Black Friday and Cyber Monday now have a philanthropic counterpart: #GivingTuesday. The national day of giving—currently in its second year—is slated for Dec. 3. UC San Diego is once again participating as an official partner of #GivingTuesday, which encourages charitable giving and celebrates the spirit of philanthropy.

November 21, 2013 — The University of California, San Diego is home to the first and only Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination, honoring the vision of “2001: A Space Odyssey” author Arthur C. Clarke. Today, the campus is announcing a $1 million gift from San Diego-based satellite and digital communications innovator ViaSat Inc. that will continue Clarke’s greatest legacy: imagination. In recognition of this charitable donation, ViaSat has been named Founding Partner of the Clarke Center.

November 20, 2013 — On the second Thursday of each month, a group of UC San Diego volunteers meets in the evenings at the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank to help sort through donations and assemble food packages for San Diego community members in need. Vanessa Pool, project manager at the Qualcomm Institute, the UC San Diego division of Calit2, started the UC San Diego Night at the Food Bank in June 2008.

November 20, 2013 — The University of California, San Diego has updated its UniversityLink program, providing guaranteed admission for eligible local students to encourage them to attend UC San Diego. The initiative seeks to increase the number of students who transfer to UC San Diego from participating community colleges in the San Diego and Imperial counties.

November 19, 2013 — Bioengineers at the University of California, San Diego have used the genomic sequences of 55 E. coli strains to reconstruct the metabolic repertoire for each strain. Surprisingly, these reconstructions do an excellent job of predicting the kind of environment where each strain will thrive, the researchers found.

November 19, 2013 — Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine say metastatic colorectal cancer patients of African-American descent are less likely to be seen by cancer specialists or receive cancer treatments. This difference in treatment explains a large part of the 15 percent higher mortality experienced by African-American patients than non-Hispanic white patients.
