Experts in the field of mindfulness will gather in San Diego from Feb. 7-9 to share the latest advancements in education, clinical care and research as it applies to the healthy development of youth through the application of meditation. The experiential conference, sponsored by the UC San Diego School of Medicine and Center for Mindfulness, will offer a combination of more than 40 compelling lectures, research symposia and breakout sessions to a diverse audience of school educators, healthcare providers, psychotherapists, and researchers.

With the help of biomimetic matrices, a research team led by bioengineers at the University of California, San Diego has discovered exactly how calcium phosphate can coax stem cells to become bone-building cells. This work is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the week of Jan. 6, 2014.

The University of California, San Diego today announced the appointment of Steve Gamer as vice chancellor - advancement with responsibility for leading campus fundraising efforts and alumni relations; he will also serve as president of the UC San Diego Foundation. An associate vice chancellor for development at the University of California, Los Angeles, Gamer will begin his service at UC San Diego in January 2014.

The first Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) workshop of 2014 gets underway on Wednesday, Jan. 8 in room 4004 of Atkinson Hall on the UCSD campus. The three-day Workshop on Complexity and Coding Theory will focus on recent topics at the intersection of theoretical computer science and coding theory, such as local codes, list-decodable codes, polar codes and network codes.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine report that an oncogene dubbed ROR1, found on chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) B cells but not normal adult tissues, acts as an accelerant when combined with another oncogene, resulting in a faster-developing, more aggressive form of CLL in mice.

Biologists at UC San Diego have discovered an effective strategy that could prevent the human immune system from rejecting the grafts derived from human embryonic stem cells, a major problem now limiting the development of human stem cell therapies. Their discovery may also provide scientists with a better understanding of how tumors evade the human immune system when they spread throughout the body.

Chemists have caught molecules in the act of biosynthesis revealing an animated view of how a fundamental piece of cellular machinery operates. The system they observed, a critical metabolic pathway, generates fatty acids, essential components of fats and structures such as cell membranes. Nature published their findings in the early online edition December 22.
