Newly Discovered Cells Regenerate Liver Tissue Without Forming Tumors

August 13, 2015

…School of Medicine have discovered a population of liver cells that are better at regenerating liver tissue than ordinary liver cells, or hepatocytes. The study is the first to identify these so-called “hybrid hepatocytes,” and show that they are able to regenerate liver tissue without giving rise to cancer.

Access Denied: Leukemia Thwarted by Cutting Off Link to Environmental Support

July 29, 2015

…cutting off the ability of tumors to access nearby cellular players that feed its growth.

Engineers 3D-print a New Lifelike Liver Tissue for Drug Screening

February 8, 2016

A team led by engineers at the University of California, San Diego has 3D-printed a tissue that closely mimics the human liver’s sophisticated structure and function. The new model could be used for patient-specific drug screening and disease modeling. Researchers said the advance could help pharmaceutical companies save time and…

New Insights into 3D Genome Organization and Genetic Variability

February 18, 2015

…the genes in a cell or organism, epigenomics is the study of all the genomic add-ons and changes that influence gene expression but aren’t encoded in the DNA sequence. A variety of new epigenomic information is now available in a collection of studies published Feb. 19 in Nature by the…

Andeans with Altitude Sickness Produce Massive Amounts of Red Blood Cells

November 7, 2016

…California San Diego School of Medicine studied red blood cells derived from representatives of both groups living in the Andes Mountains. The study reveals that high-altitude, low-oxygen dwellers prone to chronic mountain sickness produce massive amounts of red blood cells thanks to overproduction of the enzyme SENP1.

Computer Scientists Develop New Approach to Sort Cells Up to 38 Times Faster

October 2, 2013

…that marries computer vision and hardware optimization to sort cells up to 38 times faster than is currently possible. The approach could be used for clinical diagnostics, stem cell characterization and other applications.

$150 Million Gift Takes Stem Cell Research to New Heights

September 6, 2022

Noted businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford has committed $150 million in new funding to expand and, in some ways, quite literally launch stem cell research and regenerative medicine at University of California San Diego into new spaces and endeavors.

Chasing Down a Cellular ‘Short Circuit’

June 4, 2024

A group of researchers at University of California San Diego has identified the cause of a “short-circuit” in cellular pathways, a discovery that sheds new light on the genesis of a number of human diseases and could lead to development of a wide array of new drugs.

Researchers Create Model of Anorexia Nervosa Using Stem Cells

March 14, 2017

An international research team, led by scientists at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, has created the first cellular model of anorexia nervosa (AN), reprogramming induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) derived from adolescent females with the eating disorder.

Dysfunction in Neuronal Transport Mechanism Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease

October 12, 2016

…Medicine have confirmed that mutation-caused dysfunction in a process cells use to transport molecules within the cell plays a previously suspected but underappreciated role in promoting the heritable form of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but also one that might be remedied with existing therapeutic enzyme inhibitors.
