It’s 10 o’clock on a Tuesday morning and the UC San Diego Health System Level-1 Trauma Center is quiet. The only sounds are beeps and tones from machines monitoring the health and status of a handful of patients, the subdued bustle of staff tending to their work and family members visiting their sick or injured loved ones in the adjacent Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN) has selected Kelley Thompson to receive a 2014 PCFSN Community Leadership Award. The award is given to individuals and organizations who significantly improve the lives of others through sports, fitness or nutrition-related programs within local neighborhoods.
Computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego, have developed a tool that allows hardware designers and system builders to test security- a first for the field. One of the tool’s potential uses is described in the May-June issue of IEEE Micro magazine.
Results from a cross-border collaborative research effort studying employment and industries of the San Diego and Imperial counties as well as Baja California––which together make up the CaliBaja region––provides evidence of the region’s importance as a hub for manufacturing, with particular strengths in industry sectors like audio and video equipment manufacturing, and medical device and supplies manufacturing.
The Health Data Exploration project, from the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) and the University of California, Irvine (UCI), has been awarded a $1.9 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), to create a network of researchers, scientists, companies and others to catalyze the use of personal health data for the public good. The Network will be spotlighted today in a presentation at Health Datapalooza by Matthew Bietz, PhD, lead co-investigator for the Health Data Exploration project.
The University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center will host the 8th annual Survivor Beach on Sunday, June 15 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa in Mission Bay. The event will culminate Cancer Survivor Week, a week-long series of annual special events hosted by Moores Cancer Center. Survivor Beach will feature a beach festival, barbeque, live music, stand-up paddleboard (SUP) competitions for all skill levels and ages, and a paddle out for cancer survivors. Hundreds of community members are expected to gather for the day-long event in solidarity with and celebration of survivors and their caregivers.
