UC San Diego Research Affairs –The Office of Innovation and Commercialization launches the first of an eighteen-month entrepreneurial seminar series, free and open to anyone at UC San Diego and the general public, including members of any other research institutions, Mar. 9.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego is collaborating with the Icelandic Coast Guard (ICG) on a groundbreaking study of the extreme ocean surface conditions that characterize the waters off that country’s coast.
In the largest display of scholarship and creativity in visual arts at the university, UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts graduate students have organized two full days of programs designed to welcome the campus and community. The annual events known as the “Ph.D. Symposium” and the “Open Studios” highlight graduate student achievements. The programs take place Friday, March 3, 3:30 – 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 4, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. in three campus locations: the University Art Gallery, the Structural and Materials Engineering Building and the Visual Arts Facility.
Biofuel cells that are powered by human sweat. 3D printed heart tissue. Tiny robots that could deliver drugs. Stretchable and wearable electronics. These are just a few ways that nanoengineers at UC San Diego are making a big splash—at the nanoscale level.
In the past decade, UC San Diego engineers have 3D printed a variety of devices ranging from rocket engines, to robots, to structures inspired by the seahorse’s tail. Now, nanoengineers have added a new item to that list: a 3D printed blood vessel network.
“Classifications and distinctions based on race or color have no moral or legal validity in our society; they are contrary to our constitution and laws.” Such is the message on the doors to Thurgood Marshall College’s newly renovated Ocean View dining hall. Spoken by the college’s namesake, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, the words highlight the principles of diversity and equality central to the new campus eatery.
