UC San Diego takes the stage in many programs—its Department of Theatre and Dance easily commanding the spotlight. Proof positive are three recent Tony Award nominations earned by alumni Michael Greif (MFA directing, ’85), nominated for Best Direction of a Musical, “Dear Evan Hansen;” Jefferson Mays (MFA acting, ’91), nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, “Oslo;” and Paloma Young (MFA, costume design, ’06), nominated for Best Costume Design of a Musical, “Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.”
Anne Artz, a teacher at The Preuss School UCSD, will spend her summer vacation a little differently this year. Approximately one week after she finishes the school year on June 23, Artz will head to Vietnam for a six-week teaching stint as part of the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short-Term grant.
Areian Eghbali, a junior at the University of California San Diego, has developed an outreach program to introduce local underserved high school students to learning and career paths in STEM. To help fund the project, he has been named a 2017 recipient of the Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarship, a $10,000 award to launch his program.
CSE Associate Teaching Professor Christine Alvarado wins the trifecta of teaching awards this year. She’ll accept the awards from the Tau Beta Pi honors engineering society, the Jacobs School of Engineering, and the Academic Senate.
Abdikarin (Abdi) Abdullahi wasn’t sure he’d ever attend college–no one in his family had gone to college and they didn’t have the financial resources to pay for tuition. Fortunately, he earned good grades in high school, which qualified him for UC San Diego’s Chancellor’s Scholars Program, ensuring his future as a Triton. The program awards four-year scholarships to outstanding entering freshmen and provides them with other supportive resources.
