Roger Tsien, PhD, professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine who shared the 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his role in helping develop and expand the use of green fluorescent proteins (GFP) was honored today with one of the first-ever “Golden Goose Awards.”
The University of California, San Diego has been ranked 8th best public university and 38th best university in the nation by U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 Best Colleges guidebook released today.
A researcher now at the University of California, San Diego, Wanmin Wu, wrote the outstanding Ph.D. dissertation worldwide last year in the field of multimedia computing, communications and applications, according to an international jury of top experts.

Since then, UC San Diego Mobile—which includes more than 20 different apps—has become a powerful tool for students, faculty and staff. Today’s students can view their schedule of courses, get personalized walking directions to class, buy their textbooks and check the menu of the nearest dining hall—all from their mobile devices.
For the third consecutive year, the University of California, San Diego has been recognized by the Washington Monthly as the nation’s top college in rankings that measure “what colleges are doing for the country.” The rankings, listed in the September 2012 issue, are based on research, social mobility and commitment to service.
The University of California, San Diego is ranked the 15th best university in world and its life sciences program is ranked 9th, according to the 2012 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) that was released Aug. 15, 2012 by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
