Google has announced two new Google Faculty Research Awards to CSE alumni and one to CSE Prof. Ravi Ramamoorthi in the Jacobs School of Engineering of the University of California, San Diego. It is Ramamoorthi's second such award, after receiving one in 2014 while he was still at UC Berkeley (just months before he joined the CSE faculty at UC San Diego). In 2015 CSE Prof. Steven Swanson was the sole recipient at UC San Diego of the Faculty Research Award.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego Distinguished Professor William Gerwick received the American Society of Pharmacognosy’s Norman R. Farnsworth Research Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to natural products research. Gerwick will accept the award during the Society’s annual meeting in July at the 2016 Joint Natural Products Conference in Copenhagen.
The University of California, San Diego has been ranked 14th nationally among large schools on the 2016 Peace Corps list of colleges and universities that produce the most Peace Corps Volunteers, moving up one spot from last year. This marks the sixth consecutive year that UC San Diego has been named in the organization’s top 15 rankings and the 10th straight year that the campus has appeared in the top 25.
Liebermann's pioneering research on underwater sound made a significant contribution to submarine detection during World War II. His subsequent work at UC San Diego identified physical properties of sea water that can muffle sound and limit SONAR performance.
Twenty-two University of California, San Diego scientists and physicians are among the 2015 listing of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds,” an annual compendium of “Highly Cited Researchers” by Thomson Reuters, a multinational mass media and information company.
