On the second Thursday of each month, a group of UC San Diego volunteers meets in the evenings at the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank to help sort through donations and assemble food packages for San Diego community members in need. Vanessa Pool, project manager at the Qualcomm Institute, the UC San Diego division of Calit2, started the UC San Diego Night at the Food Bank in June 2008.
Five UC San Diego undergraduate students who are former foster youth and two junior faculty members were awarded a technology package from Sony Electronics, Inc., as part of a nationwide scholarship program during a reception on Nov. 1. Sony has awarded equipment packages annually for the past five years—a total approximate value of $53,000—to help UC San Diego students and faculty achieve their academic and teaching goals.
Students in the Kaibigang Pilipin@ student organization have joined together to help victims of the Haiyan Typhoon in the Philippines. Yesterday, Kaibigang Pilipin@ (KP) org members tabled on Library Walk to collect donations that included canned food and clothing. In addition, the students placed a donation bin in the Cross Cultural Center to collect items such as wound care materials, mosquito repellent, infant formula and blankets.

A steel beam, painted white and graced by a living evergreen tree, an American flag, and dozens of signatures and messages, swung across a blue sky and into place atop the superstructure of UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center Thursday. The final beam marked the midpoint between groundbreaking and completion—and a huge milestone for UC San Diego. The special event was “topped out” with a surprise announcement from Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.
The University of California, San Diego today celebrated the “topping out” of UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center, the largest hospital project in southern California. UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla also announced a $25 million challenge gift for the project from an anonymous donor.
