Charity Stone feels the financial pressure of being a mother of two and a fulltime student at the University of California, San Diego. But this fall her budget burden will be lightened with a Student Foundation scholarship raised by her fellow students.
The University of California, San Diego’s international research program Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experiences (PRIME) recently received a pleasant surprise—a $100,000 gift from young alumna Haley Hunter-Zinck. The funds will support the greatest needs of the PRIME program, including assistance for future students who travel to the Pacific Rim to conduct research. Hunter-Zinck made the donation in memory of her late mother, Jennifer Zinck.
The UC San Diego Foundation has announced that 10 new community and business leaders, including four alumni of the University of California, San Diego, will join its Board of Trustees for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.
The University of California, San Diego will host its annual Dinner in the Library fundraiser Friday, Sept. 14 at 5:30 p.m. The evening’s festivities—which will take place in the iconic Geisel Library building—will include a gourmet dinner, a silent auction, and a keynote talk on “The Lost Art of Reading” by Los Angeles Times book critic David Ulin.
For Nobel laureate Roger Tsien, the drive to help find a cure for cancer stems from personal experience. His father battled prostate cancer and ultimately lost his life to pancreatic cancer. As a professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, he has worked to develop a novel way to image and possibly even deliver specially targeted drugs to cancer tumors.
“Good times for a good cause” is the philosophy of the annual Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic, taking place Saturday, August 11 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Featuring live entertainment and great food—in addition to golf—the tournament raises funds for cancer research at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.
