As a global academic powerhouse with an iconic ocean backdrop, UC San Diego is known for making waves in research, athletics and beyond. Recently, the university awarded the first college surfing scholarship ever recognized by the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA).
Since it was established nearly three decades ago, UC San Diego’s RIMAC Arena has been home to countless athletic competitions, graduations, concerts and other events that are imprinted on the memories of thousands of UC San Diego alumni, students, friends and visitors.
UC San Diego’s esports program often leads the way. In 2022, after two years of constraints imposed by the COVID-19 global pandemic, it plans to resume in-person activities, with two major events in the works.
Longtime campus champions Gary and Jerri-Ann Jacobs believe in the power of the next generation to make change for the better. And it is imperative, they say, to “create the opportunity for anybody who is eligible and wants to come to UC San Diego to do so.”
UC San Diego erased an 11-point first half deficit to win 80-67 at Cal in the 2021-22 season opener Tuesday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. Toni Rocak scored a career-high 27, Bryce Pope added 18, and Matt Gray chipped in 10 for the visitors who are now 1-0 vs. the Pac-12 Conference as a member of NCAA Division I.
