In a bold and singular step toward delivering the therapeutic promise of human stem cells, businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford has committed $100 million to the creation of the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center at the University of California, San Diego.
A steel beam, painted white and graced by a living evergreen tree, an American flag, and dozens of signatures and messages, swung across a blue sky and into place atop the superstructure of UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center Thursday. The final beam marked the midpoint between groundbreaking and completion—and a huge milestone for UC San Diego. The special event was “topped out” with a surprise announcement from Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.
Thanks to a new partnership with the University of California’s award-winning television station, the UC San Diego Library has launched a new channel on UCTV.
The University of California, San Diego today celebrated the “topping out” of UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center, the largest hospital project in southern California. UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla also announced a $25 million challenge gift for the project from an anonymous donor.
Over the years, Transportation Services has played a significant role in transforming UC San Diego into an award-winning campus for sustainability. The percentage of campus commuters using alternative transportation has increased from 34 to an impressive 59 percent in just the last 10 years. As a result, Transportation Services’ costs for funding transit and shuttle programs have dramatically increased over the past several years, while incoming revenue from parking has decreased.
Hillary Fitzmaurice, currently a student at Fullerton College in Orange County, hopes to study linguistics at UC San Diego. “I plan on applying for next fall and am very excited about the opportunities available for research,” she said. Fitzmaurice was one of the 160 prospective transfer students who attended the campus’s “Transfer Friday” event Oct. 11. The event was the first of three scheduled for the 2013-2014 academic school year.
