On Friday, June 10, a special celebration was held to honor the achievements of the Class of 2020—the graduates who completed their degree as the COVID-19 pandemic began to sweep across the globe. More than 1,250 members of the class returned to UC San Diego to participate in the event.
Brightly colored streamers marked the way to the Stage Room on Saturday morning where a record number of graduates who identify as LGBTQIA+ gathered to celebrate the completion of their UC San Diego degree. The event, called Rainbow Graduation, was hosted by the university’s LGBT Resource Center.
Jessica Meir had dreamed for decades about what it would be like to sail among the stars. And when she got her chance in 2019, the experience surpassed all of her expectations. This weekend, the UC San Diego alumna will return to the university to share her journey to space as a NASA astronaut.
On June 11-12, more than 8,000 graduates will be honored in a series of commencement ceremonies for each undergraduate college, the Graduate Division, Rady School of Management and School of Global Policy and Strategy.
As Lucas Anthony Lima prepares to deliver a message of congratulations to his 7,000 peers as Commencement student speaker, he draws inspiration from the lessons he has instilled in his little brother. The most important of these is believing in yourself, especially when the road gets rocky.
