Distinguished alumni of the University of California, San Diego including filmmaker and animator Mike Judge, as well as all three members of the YouTube sensation, Wong Fu Productions will be recognized during the campus’s annual Alumni Weekend, June 4-7. Also honored will be San Diego Unified School District superintendent Cindy Marten and founder of Realty Changers Christopher Yanov, among others.
On June 15, the Qualcomm Institute will kick off its new season of nine works involving residencies and performances funded by the institute’s Initiative for Digital Exploration of Arts and Sciences (IDEAS). The interdisciplinary work, titled CrowdCAVE, will use two of the Qualcomm Institute’s key visualization spaces: the StarCAVE virtual-reality environment, where small groups of visitors are surrounded by a virtual crowd to which they are added; and the large-scale Vroom display wall next door in the Calit2 Theater, which will showcase the full breadth of the virtual group portraiture. “By using the Vroom display wall,” says UC San Diego visual arts lecturer Emily Grenader (MFA ’13), “we will be able to adequately show the ties between individuals at different locations performing in different ways.”
The University of California, San Diego will host “An Evening with Mayim Bialik” on May 27 where the TV star best known for her roles in the current, popular CBS series “The Big Bang Theory” and “Blossom,” which aired on NBC from 1990 to 1995, will address campus students, faculty staff and alumni.
San Diego community members, physicians and cancer survivors will come together Saturday, April 25 at the Grand Del Mar for SPARK Gala, an evening to “ignite the fight against cancer.”
Attorney E. Randol Schoenberg was able to accomplish what few thought was possible— He recovered Gustav Klimt’s famous “Golden Lady” painting, which was stolen by the Nazis in 1938. Schoenberg’s experiences are the subject of a newly released movie, Woman in Gold, which he will discuss at the May 6 Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLHW) event, sponsored by Phyllis and Daniel Epstein. HLWH is a collaboration between the UC San Diego Library and the Jewish Studies program.
The University of California, San Diego will recognize Earth Week, April 19-25 with festivities which will include a trash sort, Earth Day fair, walking tours of campus sustainability initiatives and more. This year’s celebration is particularly important, as campus community members have a special call to action: Conserve water.
