UC San Diego Receives Three International CASE Awards
Books & CultureThe Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has recognized UC San Diego for excellence in advertising, branding and video production in the 2017 Circle of Excellence Awards. The international competition recognizes educational institutions and nonprofits annually for outstanding work in advancement services, alumni relations, communications, marketing and fundraising for higher education. This year’s awards program received 3,364 entries from 715 member institutions worldwide. Entries were considered by category and judged by peer professionals, who selected 366 winners from over 200 member institutions—including three from UC San Diego.
2017-18 Holocaust Living History Workshop Series Launches with Focus on “The Possibility of Renewal”
Events & HappeningsThe Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLWH) at the University of California San Diego once again launches a year-long series of educational events that will focus on the theme, The Possibility of Renewal: The Shoah Between Past, Present, and Future. This year’s programming, presented by the UC San Diego Library and the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program, will unearth how renewal is possible in the wake of genocide, shed light on what it means for a defeated people to resurrect its past, and explore the roles of memory and justice in the process of renewal.
His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco to Join 100th Birthday Celebration of Walter Munk
Events & HappeningsWalter Munk joined Scripps Institution of Oceanography as a young doctoral student in 1939 in what would start a nearly eight-decade-long career of scientific discovery, daring science and transforming how the world understands the ocean. The ocean science pioneer is being honored throughout 2017, including in a visit from His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco on Oct. 26.
Environmentalism at Center of John Muir College 50th Anniversary Celebration
Books & CultureAs the University of California San Diego’s second college, John Muir College admitted its first students in 1967. 50 years later, the college is celebrating its golden anniversary with a year-long series of festive events. Muir’s current students and alumni are invited to the college for a kick-off festival for the reveal of the time capsule sealed and buried by the founding class from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 2. Other events include a talk from one of the college’s founding faculty, Irwin Jacobs, a week of celebratory events for John Muir’s birthday, which coincides with the campus’s Earth Month activities, as well as an environmental conference featuring Muir biographer Donald Worster.
‘Gone With the Waves’ Project Documents Puerto Rico’s Coastline and Cultural Heritage
Books & CultureJust ahead of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, a UC San Diego research team was able to map and document various underwater and coastal features along Puerto Rico’s coast last month, providing baseline measurements of a number of important archaeological sites that are vulnerable to coastal erosion, particularly due to climate change.
