December 6, 2016 — Cheryl Hile, a fund manager at UC San Diego, has embarked on an ambitious effort to become the first patient with multiple sclerosis to run seven marathons on seven continents in a single year, including races in Hawaii this month and Antarctica in January.

November 21, 2016 — The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has awarded the distinction of fellow to 391 members, including five from the University of California San Diego. The new UC San Diego fellows, who will be recognized on Feb. 18 during the 2017 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston, are Richard Carson, Konstantine Georgakakos, David Gough, Larry Smarr, and Lynne Talley.

November 18, 2016 — An international team of computer scientists has for the first time developed a method to find antibiotics hidden in huge but still unexplored mass spectrometry datasets. They detailed their new method, called DEREPLICATOR, in the Oct. 31 issue of Nature Chemical Biology.
