February 14, 2017 — The Center for Cyber-Archaeology and Sustainability (CCAS) and the Qualcomm Institute played host to nearly 200 freshmen and older students taking computer science, robotics or AP world history at La Jolla Country Day School. The students converged on UC San Diego to learn more about how technology can safeguard the future of the ancient past.

February 13, 2017 — UC San Diego distinguished professor of engineering Mohan Trivedi in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department has accepted the distinguished alumnus award from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Trivedi returned to the campus for the first time in nearly 43 years to accept the honor.

February 10, 2017 — The International Society of Computational Biology (ISCB) has announced the winners of its top four awards for 2017, and leading the list is UC San Diego computer-science professor Pavel Pevzner. The Accomplishments by a Senior Scientist Award honors Pevzner's almost 30 years in the field of bioinformatics, and in particular his significant contributions to research and education.

February 9, 2017 — Think you have an idea that will change health care but need the means to bring your innovation to fruition? Register for UC Health Hack, a two-day interdisciplinary hackathon that will bring students, physicians, researchers, industry professionals and community members together to grapple with integrative medicine and global health issues in a fast-paced competition.

February 8, 2017 — Engineers at the University of California San Diego have developed a desktop diagnosis tool that detects the presence of harmful bacteria in a blood sample in a matter of hours instead of days.  The breakthrough was made possible by a combination of proprietary chemistry, innovative electrical engineering and high-end imaging and analysis techniques powered by machine learning.  The team details their work in the Feb. 8 issue of Nature Scientific Reports.

February 6, 2017 — On Wednesday, March 1, UC San Diego will hand out its 2016 Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Diversity Awards at a ceremony in the Price Center West Ballroom. Three Jacobs School of Engineering faculty made the honor roll: CSE’s Christine Alvarado, ECE’s Pamela Cosman, and NanoEngineering’s Darren Lipomi.

February 6, 2017 — Thanks to local and regional elected officials who helped assure passage of Assembly Bill 2664, the University of California San Diego has received $2.2 million from the UC system to help spur innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.

February 3, 2017 — At recent celebratory receptions, more than 200 campus and community members paid tribute to the legacy of the late Harold Cohen, University of California San Diego Department of Visual Arts professor emeritus who passed away last year. Renowned for creating AARON, an artificial intelligence art-making machine, Cohen and his affiliated works are featured in an honorary exhibition entitled “Harold Cohen, Creating Computational Creativity.” It surveys 40 years of the vibrant and large-scale prints that demonstrate Cohen’s innovative process and invites dialogue about the role of the artist and art. The show runs at the University Art Gallery and in the Visual Arts Gallery in the Structural and Materials Engineering (SME) Building through Feb. 17, when it will conclude with a closing symposium, "Art and Artificial Intelligence (AI), After AARON." The symposium will feature leaders in contemporary art and AI from Google, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego and the Salk Institute.

February 2, 2017 — Of the 10 Microsoft Ph.D. Fellowships announced today by Microsoft Research, two of the awards went to graduate students in UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering: Computer Science and Engineering Ph.D. student Mengting Wan, and Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. student Bita Darvish Rouhani. No other university received more than one of this year’s fellowships.

February 2, 2017 — Computer Science and Engineering Ph.D. student C. Ailie Fraser has been awarded one of ten Adobe Research Fellowships in 2017 to pursue her work in human-computer interaction and human-centered design as a researcher in the Design Lab at UC San Diego.
