Briana Bilbray is only 25, yet she is undergoing the fight of her life—against melanoma. In addition to waging a battle against the disease, Briana is also working to raise awareness of the risks of melanoma, particularly among young people.

Enzo Ocio, a premature baby born 1 pound, 10 ounces at only 25 weeks, spent four and a half months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the University of California, San Diego Health System in Hillcrest. He was put on life support, suffered from multiple infections and struggled to eat on his own without the help of a feeding tube.

The Bernard Osher Foundation has donated $500,000 to the University of California, San Diego, establishing an endowment to provide scholarships for students transferring from the California Community Colleges System. These funds will support a new scholarship award for high-achieving student parents who transfer to UC San Diego and have financial need.

The University of California, San Diego’s international research program Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experiences (PRIME) recently received a pleasant surprise—a $100,000 gift from young alumna Haley Hunter-Zinck. The funds will support the greatest needs of the PRIME program, including assistance for future students who travel to the Pacific Rim to conduct research. Hunter-Zinck made the donation in memory of her late mother, Jennifer Zinck.

The University of California, San Diego will host its annual Dinner in the Library fundraiser Friday, Sept. 14 at 5:30 p.m. The evening’s festivities—which will take place in the iconic Geisel Library building—will include a gourmet dinner, a silent auction, and a keynote talk on “The Lost Art of Reading” by Los Angeles Times book critic David Ulin.
