For Nobel laureate Roger Tsien, the drive to help find a cure for cancer stems from personal experience. His father battled prostate cancer and ultimately lost his life to pancreatic cancer. As a professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, he has worked to develop a novel way to image and possibly even deliver specially targeted drugs to cancer tumors.

“Good times for a good cause” is the philosophy of the annual Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic, taking place Saturday, August 11 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Featuring live entertainment and great food—in addition to golf—the tournament raises funds for cancer research at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

The beach of La Jolla Shores will be home to a possible record-breaking line of surfboards on June 10, as hundreds of cancer survivors, caregivers, friends and surfers gather together in solidarity in the fight to wipe out cancer. As part of UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center’s 6th annual Survivor Beach, attendees will line surfboards along the shore, nose-to-tail, from Scripps Pier down La Jolla Shores, in a stunning visual display.

Computers have changed the landscape of humanities research. Innovations continue to make it cheaper and easier to digitize and analyze ever larger volumes of data. But most e-humanities tools focus on manuscripts and other textual records. Now researchers at the University of California, San Diego are working to enable widespread exploration of big image and video collections, too.

The 15th annual Fiesta de las Estrellas—a “celebration of the stars” hosted by the University of California, San Diego’s Hispanic Scholarship Council—will raise much-needed scholarship funding for ambitious and motivated UC San Diego students on April 18. Since its founding 15 years ago, the event has raised more than $1 million for undergraduate scholarships to help ensure that students from all backgrounds can access a world-class UC San Diego education.

When Bobbi Warren was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer a year and a half ago, she was not surprised. Cancer was an all too familiar figure in her family—her father and sister had both died from cancer and her son is a survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

In 2004, the University of California, San Diego Libraries acquired one of the region’s most significant archives—the papers of Chicano activist Herman Baca— documenting the struggles and achievements of the Chicano Movement in San Diego from 1964 to 2006.
