MFA Artist Heejung Shin Named First David Antin Prize Winner at UC San Diego

UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts artist Heejung Shin is awarded the inaugural David Antin Prize. Named after poet, artist and founding member of the department, the prize is given to a graduating MFA student who shows originality and creativity in art practice or criticism.

Andrew J. Viterbi, a renowned pioneer in the communications world, is creating a lasting legacy in health care through a philanthropic gift of $50 million to the University of California San Diego. Inspired by his father, an ophthalmologist, Viterbi’s gift will name The Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology and The Viterbi Family Vision Research Center, and create six new endowed chairs for faculty. His generous support is dedicated to advancing research, education and eye care. The gift contributes to the Campaign for UC San Diego, the university’s $2 billion fundraising effort.

UC San Diego Announces Historic $312 Million Fundraising Year

More than $312 million was raised during fiscal year 2017-2018—a record-breaking amount for any San Diego institution of higher education in a single year. The funds go toward the university’s $2 billion goal as part of the Campaign for UC San Diego. Since the campaign was launched in 2012, $1.6 billion has been raised.

25th Annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational Set for Aug. 19

Now in its 25th year, the annual Luau and Legends of Surf Invitational unites more than 500 surfers, scientists and cancer survivors who share two great passions: surfing and finding a cure for cancer. All proceeds from the public event, which has raised over $8 million since it was launched in 1993, go to support research, teaching and clinical programs at Moores Cancer Center—the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in our region, and one of only 49 in the U.S.

The UC San Diego Board of Trustees are unique ambassadors who dedicate their time and talents to supporting the university’s continued growth. This year, eight trustees will join the 2018-19 UC San Diego Foundation Board.
