UC San Diego Explores World Beats during Intercultural Music Conference

Composer Hilda Paredes used the Mayan calendar as the basis for her solo percussion piece, “Tzolkin,” with soft eerie pulses suggesting the passage of ancient time. In a sense, her music bridged the divide between modern Mexico and its poor indigenous communities. Paredes’ work, and other compositions from around the world, will be performed Feb. 26 – 28 at UC San Diego Department of Music’s Intercultural Music Conference (ICM). More than 80 composers, scholars and performers will present three days of lectures, concerts and panel discussions exploring music in our rapidly evolving intercultural landscape. They’ll consider music in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Mexico and other locales. Concerts will showcase both traditional and contemporary music.

“Happy Birthday To You” – Dr. Seuss’ 112th Birthday Celebration Set for March 2nd

The University of California, San Diego campus is making preparations for its annual birthday party to celebrate one of the campus’s most beloved luminaries, Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The fantastically creative children’s book author’s 112th birthday celebration coincides with national Read Across America Day and comes on the heels of the UC San Diego Library’s recent announcement to name its new café in honor of the author’s wife, Audrey Geisel.

Two UC San Diego Faculty Receive Prestigious Sloan Research Fellowships

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has selected two UC San Diego faculty for Sloan Research Fellowships in 2016. This year’s recipients at UC San Diego are Charles Sprenger, associate professor of economics and strategy, Rady School of Management and the Department of Economics, and Julio Barreiro, assistant professor of physics, Department of Physics.

Google Selects UC San Diego Computer Science Professor and Alumni for Faculty Research Awards

Google has announced two new Google Faculty Research Awards to CSE alumni and one to CSE Prof. Ravi Ramamoorthi in the Jacobs School of Engineering of the University of California, San Diego. It is Ramamoorthi's second such award, after receiving one in 2014 while he was still at UC Berkeley (just months before he joined the CSE faculty at UC San Diego). In 2015 CSE Prof. Steven Swanson was the sole recipient at UC San Diego of the Faculty Research Award.

UC San Diego Hosts Third-Annual ‘Women in Philosophy’ Summer Program

The University of California, San Diego is taking applications for the Department of Philosophy’s third-annual 2016 Summer Program for Women in Philosophy (SPWP), June 20-July 1. In its third year, SPWP offers select applicants access to visiting scholars who teach two philosophy seminar courses and to UC San Diego female philosophy graduate students who lead workshops that range in topic from applying to graduate programs and navigating academic culture, to philosophical writing and funding and resources. This year's guest instructors are Connie Rosati, associate professor of philosophy at the University of Arizona, specializing in ethical theory and jurisprudence, and Sondra Bacharach, senior lecturer at Victoria University in New Zealand, specializing in aesthetics. SPWP applications are due March 1 and selected participants will be notified by April 1.

“A” is for Audrey at Geisel Library Café, Slated to Open at UC San Diego in Spring 2016

The long-awaited Geisel Library café won’t open its doors until spring 2016, but, already, it’s earned an “A.” But, this “A” is not the coveted grade, it’s for Audrey, specifically Audrey Geisel, the generous benefactor of the University of California, San Diego Library for whom the new café will be named.

Presidential Advisor John Holdren to Speak at UC San Diego

John Holdren, President Barack Obama’s senior science and technology advisor, will speak at the University of California, San Diego for the fifth annual Herb York Memorial Lecture on Monday, Feb. 29. A keynote event for the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), the visit is cosponsored by the School of Global Policy and Strategy and Jacobs School of Engineering.
