Elizabeth Keenan, of Escondido, Calif., just graduated from the Rady School of Management with a Ph.D. in management with a specialization in behavioral marketing and is one of the first students to receive a doctoral degree from Rady.

At UC San Diego, Greek life embodies values of leadership, service, intellect and lifelong friendship. With 44 social Greek organizations on campus, students have the opportunity to find their niche, and take part in experiencing a 200-year-old tradition. In addition, one of the main missions of UC San Diego Greek chapters is to bridge their organizations with the institutional missions of the university. Most recently, students in campus Greek chapters have taken the initiative to establish Greeks United for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (GUIDE) in an effort to educate their fellow students on diversity issues and advocate for social justice and equity.

A 10th-grader struggling with algebra, a teen from a military family, a high school student contemplating college and a homeless youth finding stability in the classroom—these are just a few examples of the local, underserved students who are paired with UC San Diego undergraduate tutors through numerous initiatives. These programs, led by the department of education studies, the campus’s undergraduate colleges and others, allow UC San Diego students to serve as tutors, mentors and positive role models. Yet, the undergraduates often find they learn just as much from their young partners.

Some students may choose to skip a meal occasionally to save money. But when it becomes a necessity, not an option, students at UC San Diego can stop by the Triton Food Pantry to get a free box of cereal, or package of pasta—whatever they need to continue to be successful students. A new service for all undergraduate and graduate students at UC San Diego, the Triton Food Pantry was launched by Associated Students Feb. 5 to provide discreet relief for students.

‘Tis the season for giving and members of the UC San Diego community are spreading holiday cheer to those in need in myriad ways. From donating to toy drives to serving meals and supporting fundraisers, campus volunteers are exemplifying UC San Diego’s commitment to service. Earlier this year, Washington Monthly recognized UC San Diego as the No. 1 college in the nation, for the fifth consecutive year, for its contributions to the public good. The rankings are based on three categories, one of which is service––encouraging students to give back to their country.

UC San Diego joined more than 100 countries across the globe in celebrating the world’s cultures, peoples and languages for International Education Week (IEW), Nov. 17 to 21. The week of events allowed students to participate in performances about their heritages, view an international film festival and compete in UC San Diego’s very own “Triton World Cup” soccer match.

As a first-generation college graduate, the University of California, San Diego’s vice chancellor for Student Affairs, Juan González, is committed to expanding college access, opportunity and success for students of all backgrounds. On Nov. 7, González will show this commitment along with senior leaders from all 10 UC campuses in an effort to encourage some 30,000 of high school students across the state to apply and enroll in college. Part of a system-wide initiative, “Achieve UC,” is an outreach event will take place on Nov. 7 at Castle Park High School in Chula Vista.

Students at UC system campuses, including UC San Diego, are working to prevent sexual violence on college campuses. Earlier this year, the University of California Student Association (UCSA) launched an awareness campaign entitled “UConsent,” focused on the importance of consent in sexual activity through a three-pronged approach: awareness, education and advocacy.

“Being Home: Claiming Space and Identity” is the theme of the ninth annual California Native American Day Celebration at the University of California, San Diego. The celebration, running from Oct. 3 through May 2015, will feature events that engage the complex identities of Native American tribes throughout the state and region.

A group of 70 excited and inquisitive youngsters had an opportunity to explore laboratory environments recently at the University of California, San Diego as part of the campus’s outreach efforts to encourage K-12 students to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. The elementary and middle school students were from the Elementary Institute of Science (EIS), a San Diego-based science enrichment program that nurtures students’ intellectual curiosity by providing hands-on experiences.
