August 25, 2017 — Joseph Edelman, founder and CEO of life science-focused hedge fund Perceptive Advisors, feels that poor mental health affects not only one’s personal well-being, but that of those around them and the entire economy “because people are more productive when they’re happier.” Two years ago, this belief led him to donate $400,000 to increase mental health services to students at the University of California San Diego.

August 18, 2017 — University of California San Diego received $1.160 billion in sponsored research support in FY2017 (July1-June 30), a 3 percent increase from FY2016’s total of $1.126 billion. This marks the second consecutive year in which UC San Diego broke its own previous record. Overall, the university ranks 5th in the nation in sponsored research.

May 11, 2017 — When Ryan Ruehl left the Marine Corps after five years of service as an artillery officer with two deployments, he knew he wanted to work in the medical device industry—something he’d been passionate about since high school. He already had a degree in biomedical engineering and his time in the Marines had given him the leadership skills to be successful. But several of his early startups failed. “It’s really, really hard to start a business with no support or like-minded people around,” he said.

May 11, 2017 — Ever since elementary school, UC San Diego senior biology major Jackie Nguyen knew she wanted to be an optometrist. She also knew she needed help preparing her application for optometry school, so she headed to UC San Diego’s career services for pre-health students, newly rebranded as Health Beat. Here, she was able to schedule advising appointments and receive individual help with her personal statements and interview preparation. She calls the experience “extremely valuable and helpful in my process of applying to school.”

A grocery store guide to find the exact aisle and shelf location of your favorite cereal. These aren’t just crazy ideas — they’re actual startups currently in development in The Basement, UC San Diego’s two-year-old incubator and accelerator program managed by the UC San Diego Alumni Office.
