Power!Trip Takes Art Lovers on the Ultimate Vacation

For travelers who seek out unique arts experiences, the University of California, San Diego’s renowned multi-arts presenter, ArtPower!, has put together the ultimate vacation package. Artistic Director Martin Wollesen will guide travelers through premiere arts destinations in the U.S. and overseas for in-depth experiences with performances, artists and arts leaders. The excursions, called Power!Trips, are open to the public with the objective of building support for ArtPower!

Campus Speaks Out on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Town Halls

The need for community outreach, staff and faculty education, and a focus on retention were a few of the common themes expressed by UC San Diego community members at campus town halls to discuss equity, diversity and inclusion. Moderated by Linda Greene, vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion, the town halls offered a forum for UC San Diego students, faculty and staff to share their experiences and ideas for improving the campus climate and supporting a diverse campus population.

Gifts from the Heart: Student Support Campaign Surpasses $50 Million Goal

Every February, UC San Diego scholarship recipients and donors connect at the Hearts and Scholars dinner. For students, it’s an opportunity to thank the individuals who have helped to make their education possible. For donors, it’s a chance to see the impact of their gifts—through their students’ accomplishments and dreams. At this year’s dinner, taking place Feb. 21, there will be added cause for celebration: the successful close of “Invent the Future: The UC San Diego Student Support Campaign,” which has surpassed its $50 million fundraising goal.

Breakfast with Champions to Benefit Prostate Cancer Research Feb. 22

The University of California, San Diego will host its first-ever fundraiser for prostate cancer research, “Breakfast with Champions,” on Friday, Feb. 22 at the La Jolla Country Club. The event will feature Pro Football Hall of Famers and prostate cancer survivors Mike Haynes and Deacon Jones who will discuss their experiences as champions, both on and off the field. The public is invited; all proceeds from the event will benefit prostate cancer research at the UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Shu Chien Named San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering Chief Engineer

At the 2011 National Medal of Science ceremony in which Shu Chien accepted his award, President Obama stressed the importance of encouraging young students to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Chien, a UC San Diego professor of bioengineering and medicine and director of the Institute of Engineering in Medicine, echoed the sentiment: “The strength of our country depends on science and engineering,” he said. Now, Chien is serving as the chief engineer of the 2013 San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering, taking place March 16-23.

Villa Musica Brings Together UC San Diego Faculty, Alumna, Preuss School UCSD

“Singing 1” was the course Fiona Chatwin wrote for UC San Diego Extension while pursuing her doctoral degree in musical arts at the university. Concurrently, Chatwin taught voice privately to undergraduate music minors and members of the public. One of her more advanced students was Peter Gourevitch, professor emeritus of the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, who was singing with the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus.

Volunteers Show Visitors the Best of UC San Diego

After retiring from a 20-year career as a physician with the U.S. Air Force, John Meyers settled in San Diego and began his own private medical practice. He was drawn to San Diego in part because of the new School of Medicine that was taking shape at the University of California, San Diego. In 1967, he joined the volunteer academic staff and began teaching. That marked the beginning of his lifelong commitment to the university. Today, Meyers’ volunteerism includes leading the monthly architectural campus tours for the UC San Diego Visitors Tour Program.
