The University of California, San Diego is hosting its first-ever conference designed specifically for undergraduate students interested in medical or pharmacy school. Titled “Medical Education for Diverse Students,” or MEDS, the all-day conference will include keynote speakers and workshops on various components of the application process, as well as behind-the-scenes, hands-on experiences at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

UC San Diego and Howard University are forming a partnership program aimed at increasing the number of African-American applicants to UC San Diego graduate programs, particularly in the fields of science and engineering. Supported by a $288,000 grant from the University of California Office of the President, the UC San Diego/Howard University Partnership for Graduate Student Success will provide Howard undergraduates with an intensive summer research experience at the La Jolla campus, as well as mentorship from UC San Diego faculty throughout the academic year.

UC San Diego is joining nonprofits and corporate partners across the nation to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. Olympian athlete Sonali Merrill joined King Triton, the men’s water polo team, women’s volleyball team and the campus community for Onward California Monday in Town Square. Merrill signed autographs and posed for photos as attendees added their names to the “I Believe in UC” art wall and enjoyed free gelato.

Bright green towels covered the beach near Scripps Pier Saturday for Meet the Beach, the finale event to UC San Diego’s Welcome Week. Approximately 3,500 students turned out to enjoy surf lessons, beach games, music and giveaways—like the UC San Diego Recreation beach towels. Now in its fifth year, Meet the Beach is a widely popular campus tradition that gives new students a taste of the recreation activities available at UC San Diego.
