This week, nearly half a million pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) are expected to arrive from China thanks to a donation by Joe and Clara Tsai. Much of the donated equipment, which will provide assistance in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in the state of California, will be shipped to the University of California San Diego and other health care providers in our region.

San Diego-based The Conrad Prebys Foundation today awarded a $350,000 challenge grant to support the University of California San Diego in its COVID-19 efforts. The purpose of the foundation’s match opportunity is to raise funds specifically for frontline health care in the region.

As anxiety and tension become daily emotions in the midst of dire news reports and a mandate to stay-at-home, La Jolla resident Dene Oliver said he is “…feeling sad, and yet hopeful and optimistic at the same time.” His hope and optimism are focused on the University of California San Diego, one of the nation’s leading research institutions.

On March 19, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered Californians—all 40 million of us—to stay in our homes as much as possible in the coming weeks as the state confronts the escalating coronavirus outbreak. As of March 24, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a total of 1,931 cases in California as a result of the pandemic.

To advance its goal of inclusive excellence, UC San Diego launched the Latinx/Chicanx Academic Excellence Initiative in 2018. The campuswide program, led by the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, unifies and expands services dedicated to attracting and supporting a diverse faculty, staff and student community.
