The University of California, San Diego and Emotient, the leading provider of facial expression recognition data and analysis, announced publication of a joint study by two Emotient co-founders affiliated with UC San Diego, together with researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia State University.

Albert Yu-Min Lin may now be even better known in Nevada than he is in his home state of California. The research scientist from the Qualcomm Institute at the University of California, San Diego was in Nevada in late March to accept the 27th Desert Research Institute (DRI) Nevada Medal.

On April 10, 2014, the Qualcomm Institute at the University of California, San Diego will kick off its Spring 2014 exhibition, Senses of Care: Mediated Ability and Interdependence, in the gallery@calit2. The opening of the exhibition will feature a talk by the curatorial team, led by UC San Diego associate professor of communication Brian Goldfarb, as well as a reception, both open to the public. The exhibition runs through June 13 in the gallery on the first floor of Atkinson Hall. It will remain in the gallery through the summer, but will be viewable by appointment only.

The term ‘selfie’ took on a life of its own in 2013, especially after the Oxford English Dictionary selected it as the ‘international word of the year’. The Internet and mobile phones were awash in self-portraits as consumers purchased more smartphones with front-facing cameras – turning the selfie into a truly worldwide phenomenon. Now comes more evidence that selfies have come to inhabit a unique place in world culture – a place with a Web address of its own: Selfiecity.net.
