After a two-year hiatus, a team from the Center for Networked Systems (CNS) at the University of California, San Diego came roaring back to set three new world records in a data processing competition for industry and academe. CNS associate director George Porter, former CNS director Amin Vahdat (now at Google), and Computer Science and Engineering Ph.D. student Michael Conley set a world record in the 100 Terabyte Daytona (think speed) GraySort category. They outperformed everyone else, sorting 100 TB in less than 23 minutes, but tied with the startup company Databricks (which sorted the same amount of data in 23.4 minutes). Both used the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).

The Qualcomm Institute is inviting University of California, San Diego-affiliated musicians, video artists, composers, engineers, and scientists to submit interdisciplinary event proposals to develop and/or stage their works and research in the institute’s high-tech venues.

An upcoming exhibition in the gallery@calit2 at the University of California, San Diego will explore notions of virtual and physical presence. Body Practices opens November 5 , 2014 with a panel discussion at 5pm with artists represented in the exhibition, followed by a 6pm reception. The panel and reception are open to the public and free of charge.

Nearly 40 students from the University of California, San Diego – most of them affiliated with the university’s chapter of Women in Computing – attended the 2014 Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing Oct. 8-10 in Phoenix, AZ. For two of the undergraduates majoring in computer science, it was also an opportunity to showcase research projects in the area of sketch recognition.

At the 24th International Conference on Field Programmable Logic (FPL), two papers from the University of California, San Diego were nominated for the top award, and one of the papers from the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department won for Best Paper. Both papers dealt with hardware acceleration to speed up software tasks ranging from computer vision to reconstructing human genomes.

Over 2,000 people attended the 20th ACM SIG International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD 2014), a premier interdisciplinary conference that brought together researchers and practitioners in late August from data science, data mining, knowledge discovery, large-scale data analytics, and big data. Best paper awards were handed out to academic and industry papers, and this year's Industry & Government award went to University of California, San Diego alumna Diane Hu (M.S. '09, Ph.D. '12), who did her doctoral dissertation under Computer Science and Engineering professor Lawrence Saul.

September 1 was the start date of an important new project for two faculty experts in databases and machine learning at the University of California, San Diego. Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) professor Yannis Papakonstantinou in the Jacobs School of Engineering is principal investigator on a $1.1 million new project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to build Plato, a model-based database for compressed, spatiotemporal sensor data. Co-principal investigator on the project is CSE professor Yoav Freund.

The department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego will continue growing its undergraduate enrollment in the 2014-’15 academic year. The number of new freshman students is expected to be up 36 percent compared to last year and new transfer students up 24 percent. For the first time, total undergraduate enrollment will top 2,000, up nearly seven percent. To accommodate the growth, CSE announced the hiring of Leo Porter to be an Assistant Teaching Professor, the second such hire following the arrival of Mia Minnes earlier in the summer.

Natalie Larson has three years to finish her Ph.D. in computer science at the University of California, San Diego, and she wasn’t entirely certain where she would find the support to complete her degree. But now she is. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded Larson a Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Fellowship, which will cover all of her costs for the next three years in return for a commitment to work the next two summers and at least three years in a DoD lab after graduating in 2017.
