A new study led by scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego and the Coral Reef Research Foundation (CRRF) in Palau describes a novel approach for predicting warm temperature-induced stress on corals from the sea surface through a deeper expanse ranging from 30-150 meters (100-500 feet) known as the mesophotic zone.

A graduate student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego and colleagues from NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries have discovered the world’s first known manta ray nursery.
Located in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Texas at NOAA’s Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, the juvenile manta ray habitat is the first of its kind to be described in a scientific study.

Jessica Meir is one of a few scientists and UC San Diego alumni who also hold the prestigious title of NASA astronaut. Meir obtained her Ph.D. in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2009. Last week, she returned to her alma mater to serve as keynote speaker for Blue Tech Week, an event led by the Maritime Alliance. The event that attracted more than 400 participants from academia, finance, government, industry, and the military to focus on the theme of "Smart Ocean, Smart Water."

Six years ago, visiting college senior Angelica Rodriguez spent the summer conducting oceanographic research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. In the lab, she plowed through data and analyzed in situ observations to understand the oceanic mechanisms that transport heat onto the Antarctic continental shelf in the Southern Ocean. Though Rodriguez was new to the field of oceanography, she received training and mentorship from Scripps Professor Sarah Gille and researcher Matt Mazloff. After spending ten weeks as a researcher, she was hooked.

This summer will mark the second year that the Sally Ride Science Junior Academy will offer a range of innovative science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) workshops for middle- to high school-age students. These hands-on learning experiences are taught by top-notch instructors, the majority of whom are affiliated with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.
