October 25, 2011 — UC San Diego’s Village@Torrey Pines East apartment development, featuring solar-heated showers and “wind scoops” that pull in Pacific breezes, is celebrating its grand opening with news that it won LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold certification. The green-building award recognizes Village East’s water- and energy-efficient features in addition to many other sustainability features.

October 25, 2011 — San Diego—“America’s finest city”—was once known as a sunny beach town, distinguished by a large military presence, an enduring appeal to tourists, and a burgeoning tech sector. But, according to UC San Diego political scientists Steve Erie and Vladimir Kogan, a series of critical financial and policy missteps have transformed San Diego into “Enron by the Sea,” a municipality now plagued by intractable pension and budget deficits, poorly crafted public-private partnerships, and increasingly distrustful voters who demand services but refuse to pay for them.

The outcome of each procedure is driven by dynamic factors such as the patient’s health, drugs and instruments used, team communication, and the wisdom of the surgeon’s hand. To advance safety and innovation in today’s operating rooms, the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego has unveiled the Center for the Future of Surgery (CFoS) ─ the largest state-of-the art facility in the nation dedicated to catalyzing novel surgical technologies, techniques and teaching methods.

October 18, 2011 — Researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) at the University of California, San Diego, have been awarded a three-year, $1.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create a Kepler Scientific Workflow System module. Researchers will develop new tools to help manage ever-growing data sets used in next-generation DNA sequencing.
