When David and Janice Katz sold their family business in Chicago, the couple looked forward to a full, active retirement in San Diego. They also planned to continue the philanthropic work that they had begun while in Chicago.

For billions of people, mostly in poor, undeveloped regions, intestinal roundworms are a debilitating fact of life. These parasites, which include hookworms and whipworms, infect four million children, causing stunted growth, poor mental development and malnutrition. They also have a major impact on the health of pregnant women and other adults.

An annual tradition at UC San Diego’s Founders’ Day celebration is to showcase our faculty as they share groundbreaking ideas and the inspiration for what they do. On Friday, Nov. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rady School of Management, six dynamic speakers will each offer an informal ten-minute talk about research happening at UC San Diego that has real impact on everyday life.

When Carlos Molina was a freshman in college, he decided to postpone his education to volunteer in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served two tours in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969.
